Inside the £9.5billion mega airport set to become one of the biggest in the world

A new mega airport opening next year is set to be one of the biggest in the world.

Long Thanh International Airport in Vietnam hopes to open its doors in 2026, after years of construction.

Often considered to be one of the most budget-friendly travel destinations, Vietnam has seen its popularity increase in recent years.

Indeed, Vietnam’s tourism sector has soared in 2025.

By mid-year, arrivals in the country reached 10.7 million, a 21 per cent rise from the same period in 2024, according to Market Research Vietnam.

The new airport, located in Ho Chi Minh, is set to attract more tourists and will become the country’s largest airport.

Costing VND336 trillion (£9.5billion), the airport will have three terminals along with four runways.

The main concourse will have an 82m glass roof in the shape of a lotus flower.

The new building, located on 5,000 hectares of land in Long Thanh, is expected to replace the current Tan Son Nhat International Airport, with international flights being moved over.

Tan Son Nhat International Airport could then handle domestic and short-haul flights only.

The hub could eventually welcome as many as 100million passengers a year – with the first phase being around 25million.

This would make it one of the largest hubs in the world – competing with airports in Dubai and Dallas.

A fourth terminal and the fourth runway also hope to be built by 2035.

The new airport would also reduce transfer times between airports – which can take up to five hours.

Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) is the main project developer.

The location of the new airport is further out, being around 40km from the centre of Ho Chi Minh City.

But also part of the airport plans is an expansion of the motorway that connects to the city, as well as a new metro line and high speed train.

The airport is being developed in three phases, the first of which is set to end in 2026.

Later stages will further expand the new international hub.

Aimed completion will be in 2035.
