When booking a holiday home, character, comfort and a good location are usual at the top of most tourists’ lists.
There’s one abode which offers just that, but has an interesting history behind it, too.
The Cells, in Ingleton, North Yorkshire, has been named the UK’s most historic holiday home by Sykes Cottages.
Visitors can stay in a wing of what once was a court house, complete with bars and bare brick walls.
The characterful abode features a double bedroom, as well as a single, a shower room with a walk in shower and an open plan living and dining area.
Guests can even experience walking through the original prison door, which leads to the two bedrooms.
Inside the master bedroom, holidaymakers will enjoy the luxury of a king size bed, while looking out of the original jail window.
Elsewhere in the property, the decor sees the traditional and contemporary styles meet, with exposed brick walls and modern panelling adding a twist.

The 17th-century cottage is only a few minutes walk away from a shop and pub, and is located nearby a farm.
There is gas central heating, but for extra character the living room also has a woodburning stove.
Plenty of guests have left raving reviews of the holiday home, including one who penned: ‘You still feel the history of this building the owners have done a good job with that.
‘Beautiful area with plenty of walks from this accommodation.’
Another added: ‘I love the nods to the history of the place.
‘It’s well situated for the Yorkshire 3 peaks, and of them, Ingleborough is right on the doorstep so you wouldn’t need to drive there. I’d recommend, and will be booking again.’
Someone else commented on how characterful the property was and said: ‘The property had lots of character and was very clean and comfortable.
‘Ingleton is a nice village with lots of places of interest nearby. We recommend this property and had a lovely time.’

The Cells beat other impressive accommodations, including the High Wall, which was awarded silver.
Located in the Yorkshire Dales, High Wall is a Grade II listed country house nestled away in Applewick.
While Old Monmouth, in Dorset, came third and was awarded bronze.
The property is thought to be one of the oldest houses in seaside town Lyme Regis.
