Major rail company launches unlimited travel passes for families – and they’re just £50

With train fares increasing and the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, travel within the UK is becoming a luxury many can no longer afford.

UK train fares are among the most expensive in Europe, with some routes hiked so high that it is cheaper to fly.

In an attempt to promote travel within Scotland, ScotRail has launched an unlimited travel family pass this October, covering the school holiday period.

Costing £50, the Family Pass gives up to two adults and four children unlimited train travel for seven consecutive days, starting any day between and October 13 and October 20, and is available to buy from today.

ScotRail has been owned by the Scottish Government since April 2022 and in this time, Scotland had a lower fare increase than England and Wales this year, rising 3.8 per cent compared to 4.6 per cent.

This is because of a decision by the Scottish government to keep the rise as low as possible, according to Transport Scotland.

As part of a separate initiative in September, ScotRail also removed Off-Peak tickets, replacing them with reduced Anytime fares for a simpler system.

Joanne Maguire, ScotRail managing director, said: ‘The Family Pass is designed to make it easier for families to enjoy days out together during the school holidays.

‘For £50, customers can travel as much as they like for seven days, giving them the chance to explore Scotland in an affordable and sustainable way.

‘Travelling by train remains one of the most convenient ways to get around, and with this offer, we hope to see many more people choose ScotRail.’

Cabinet Secretary for Transport, Fiona Hyslop MSP, said: ‘At a time when many families are feeling the pressure of the cost-of-living crisis, ScotRail’s Family Pass offers a practical and affordable way to enjoy Scotland’s beauty during the October holidays while keeping more money in passengers’ pockets.

‘It’s a great incentive to leave the car at home and choose a greener, more relaxing way to travel.’
