New one-day flight route brings UK travellers closer to Belize’s winter sun

A one-day flight will connect more than 20 European cities, including London, to the tropical climate of Belize – just in time for some winter sun.

From December 8, Air Canada will offer return flights from London to Belize City via Montreal starting from £611.

This new connection makes Belize, which was previously only accessible via an overnight option in the US or Mexico, a more accessible destination for UK travellers.

Belize is a compact, politically stable country of an impressive cultural richness and biodiversity. Most places are accessible by car and road signs warn of numerous exotic animals crossing, such as tapirs, jaguars, reptiles and armadillos.

Its popularity as a holiday destination is on the rise, helped by a 2022 visit by Prince William and Kate Middleton, and the fact that the former British Honduras still has English as its official language

The country is also home to the world’s second-largest barrier reef, plus hundreds of reef-frilled Cayes, the world’s first Jaguar preserve and a plethora of ancient Maya sites.

From now until March, Belize is an ideal winter sun destination with average temperatures ranging between 24 – 27°C and minimal rainfall.

Rain is delivered in short bursts of tropical downpour that refreshes the air and replenish the fauna.

This is also the ideal time for snorkelling and diving, with calm conditions ensuring good visibility and quick drying under the sun.

The Silk Caye marine reserve is a protected UNESCO Heritage site and on a snorkel tour, visitors will sail out to one of the three Cayes that make up the reserve while learning about the local groups still championing her protection to this day.

Visitors will then be able to explore the wildlife such as rays, nursing sharks, and the loggerhead and hawksbill turtles that can be found visiting the coral gardens.

Maya sites such as Caracol, home to the largest Maya temple in the country, are a must-do

A less visited but equally important Maya site is Xunantunich where on a tour from Placencia, visitors can have a guided excursion before hiking to the Nohoch Che’en Caves for tubing through the underground water system.

While floating through the archways, visitors will learn about the ancient Maya rituals and ceremonies before descending into the jungle to sail through the tree canopy on a zipline.

Less than one hour’s drive from Placencia is Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, the World’s first Jaguar preserve.

Snorkelling is a popular activity for tourists in Belize due to its location on the second-largest barrier reef in the world, the vibrant marine life and clear waters

The reserve prioritises the conservation of many species, with over 290 birds, including the toucan and scarlet macaw.

As well as tapirs, black howler monkeys and the largest concentration of jaguars, pumas and ocelots.

The park is also home to Tiger Fern Falls.

This can be accessed by hiking through the jungle, visitors can enjoy the panoramic mountain views along the way.
