A couple who ditched the UK for Mauritius revealed how their children attend the ‘best private school’ on the island for a bargain price.
Adam and Tara Short, originally from Sheffield, South Yorkshire, moved their family across the world with just four suitcases in July.
They had holidayed in Mauritius back in November 2024 with their two sons, Spencer, nine, and Xander, four.
However, the 8am to 6pm slog every week in the UK had become tiresome and they were left ‘desperate to get away from the rat race,’ Adam, 44, said.
‘We thought there had to be a better standard of life out in Mauritius – and there is. We work less hours because we can be more productive,’ he said.
What’s more, the family’s two children are now attending an international private school.
It costs just £5,000 a year, which is a lot less than the typical £25,000 in the UK, and is one of the best on the island.
‘In the UK, a private school can be like, what, £20k or £30k a year for each child? Here, it’s £5k a year for the best school on the island,’ Adam explained.

‘We were spending that much just on the breakfast and after school clubs in the UK!’
The couple decided to make the move in a bid for more quality time as a family and to enjoy island life.
Tara, 38, worked as a CEO of a company in the UK, while Adam was a car sales business owner.
They’ve managed to continue running their companies from abroad and now feel as though they are on a ‘permanent holiday’, with the children finishing school at 2.30pm and are able to visit the beach together.
Before moving, the family put their four-bed home up for rent and are now settled into a rental house that boasts a pool and is located nearby a beach.
Though things can be more expensive in Mauritius, other costs are less so.
The family’s weekly grocery shop comes to £220, including fruit and vegetables bought from a market.
However, the couple note that supermarkets and wine can be more expensive because many items are imported to the island.

Adam praised their new island life as ‘incredible’ and gushed over the weather, food and beaches.
‘Everyone is so lovely – we’ve been invited to a meal at a Mauritan family’s home this weekend. Mauritian life is very family-focused which is what we want,’ he said.
And on the weekends, the family enjoys BBQs on the beach with other families and watch their children play.
The Shorts initially gave themselves two years to see how they feel about their new life abroad, but have already feel settled and don’t see any return to the UK planned soon.
