Expert reveals the surprising weekday you should always fly on to save money

With flights, hotel costs, transfers and activities, holiday expenses soon add up and it can feel difficult to save money.

Thankfully, an expert has revealed which surprising day passengers should fly to save cash on next year’s holiday.

Many tourists choose to travel at the beginning of the week or over the weekend to make the most of their annual leave.

But there is one day in particular that can help to save a substantial amount of money.

Rob, an On The Beach insider who shares his tips on TikTok, @robonthebeach, posted a video explaining which was the best day of the week to book a holiday.

The data specifically looked at what would be the cheapest day for a couple to start their holiday next year.

The most expensive day proved to be Wednesday, and Rob explained: ‘Probably because midweek flights are packed with business travellers and that pushes the price up, especially on short-haul.’

Tuesday saves just one per cent, which Rob puts down to business travellers and it being a ‘prime day for return travellers’.

Meanwhile, Saturday saves just three per cent compared to Wednesday.

‘That’s because a lot of people are already on holiday on Saturday so it’s not as popular day to start one. Fewer check ins means better prices on flights and hotels,’ he said.

Travelling on a Sunday can help save five per cent and tourists will be more likely to enjoy ‘quieter lobbies’ and ‘few crowds’ according to Rob.

Monday proved to be six per cent cheaper than Wednesday.

Rob argues, ‘Psychologically, people tend to hate the idea of flying out on a Monday, something to do with a back to work brain, which means demand dips and airlines drop prices.’

Thursday is the second best day to travel next year, with eight per cent savings to be made compared to travelling on a Wednesday.

‘It’s a really popular day for short breaks but also long-haul and longer short-haul breaks. It’s priced a bit better because you’re missing the weekend rush, hotels love it too. Midweek turnover means they can help balance occupancy,’ Rob explained.

Friday proved to be the best day to travel for savings and worked out to be 13 per cent cheaper than jetting off on the most expensive day.

The most expensive day proved to be Wednesday, and Rob explained: ‘Probably because midweek flights are packed with business travellers and that pushes the price up, especially on short-haul.’

Rob revealed the reason why and explained how flights and hotels both play a part.

The expert said said: ‘There’s more flights. Airlines put on more leisure routes because there’s more demand which means prices get driven down.

‘It’s also the day most hotels want you to check in, meaning more package deals, more discounts and overall better value.’

He clarified that his analysis wasn’t ‘fool proof’ but advised ‘tweaking the start date’ of holidays to find better deals.
