The world’s most iconic Christmas trees and how to visit them

Adorned with sparkling lights, colourful decorations and standing amazingly tall, there are many impressive Christmas trees across the globe.

They often bring excited crowds together as their lights are switched on in an annual ceremony. Cheerful carol singers gather around them regularly during December, spreading joy and merriment.

Christmas trees are often the focal point of a city during the festive period and several have become such a big deal that they are known around the world.

Some are only a short trip away from the UK, including Paris and Lisbon.

But others are much further, like the Rockefeller Center tree that dazzles every year in New York.

For Dee Momi, founder of luxury travel company Seven Access, the ‘most impressive’ tree to visit is in Gubbio, Italy.

She exclusively tells the Daily Mail which Christmas trees are particularly dazzling and which one is ‘not always worth the hype’.

Rockefeller Center, New York

The Rockefeller Center’s Christmas tree is specially selected each year by the head gardener, Erik Pauze, who carefully chooses which Norway Spruce will stand proudly in the Center Plaza.

This year, the tree will come from East Greenbush, in New York, and will be introduced to the public on November 8.

The tree will be covered in 50,000 multi-coloured lights and is set to be topped with a Swarovski crystal star.

For those wanting to see it lit up, the lights will be switched on on December 3 and will remain on display until mid-January.

Dee says, ‘The Rockefeller Center tree in New York is perhaps the one that’s most famous but not always worth the hype – it’s undeniably iconic, but the crowds are relentless, and access is limited to fleeting moments in a sea of people.’

She recommends enjoying the tree ‘from a distance’ to enjoy the ‘wonderful’ festivities nearby.

Hotels within a few miles of the Rockefeller Center are priced from around £780 for a seven-night stay for two adults between December 13 and 20 on Expedia.

Though it might not be a traditional fir, the Galeries Lafayette artificial tree doesn’t disappoint.

It can be found just below the glass dome of the shopping centre and changes in appearance and style every year.

Dee describes it as ‘pure festive theatre’ and says its different themes makes it a ‘fashion-world favourite’.

This year’s tree will be designed by illustrator Jeanne Detallante.

Every year, it is lit up on December 7, and will be sparkling every following evening from 5pm until January 11, 2026.

Dee gushes, ‘For me, one of the most impressive Christmas trees has to be in Gubbio, Italy – not a traditional tree at all but a massive light installation stretching across Mount Ingino, so large it’s visible for miles.

‘It’s a spectacular sight and completely unique in scale.’
