Ainura Kalau, who recently turned down a friend’s holiday invite after a ‘gut feeling’ told her they wouldn’t be compatible on holiday, shared the ‘big red flags’ someone will be a nightmare to travel with.

It can be an uncomfortable conversation, but it avoids painful dynamics or even arguments when it comes to luxury experiences and splitting the bill.
People who brush off these conversations or say they are happy with whatever may seem easy-going, but it often means they haven’t thought it through, or they’re avoiding an honest conversation.
While travelling with friends may sound like a good idea, there are some red flags to look out for before booking your next trip
‘People who are genuinely easy to travel with will engage in planning conversations,’ Ainura told VegOut.
‘They’ll tell you their comfort zone with spending, what matters most to them, and what they’re hoping to get out of the trip. That clarity makes everything smoother once you’re on the road.’
Ainura’s second red flag is people who make plans without checking in with the group first.
This is self-explanatory; it shows they see the trip through their own eyes only, without considering the preferences or requirements of others.
She also warns against people who are constantly changing their minds about basic logistics.
‘The most exhausting part is that this indecisiveness rarely stops at logistics,’ she said.
This can often bleed into where to eat, what time to leave the hotel and which route to take, which means small decisions become a drawn-out negotiation.
Many of the telltale signs of a difficult travel buddy can be spotted in the way they interact with others on a day-to-day basis.
If they consistently take hours to respond to group planning messages, it could be a sign that they are not fully committed to the plans or making them a success.

‘Not every friendship translates well to travel, and that’s completely fine.’
