Holidaymakers are swapping Ibiza for this laid-back, sunny island – says travel agent who’s booked 1,000 trips there

Ibiza has long been a favourite for British holidaymakers – drawing people in with its vibrant culture, sandy beaches and hot weather.

But it appears tourists may be turning to a different destination – laid-back Menorca.

The popular Spanish spot has managed to draw in more bookings for this summer than Ibiza, according to data from TUI.

The number of passengers jetting off to Menorca are increasing year-on-year, and Brits seem to be turning to the island because of the promise of sunshine without bustling crowds.

One TUI travel agent, Claire Moye, has booked over 1,000 holidays to Menorca.

The deputy store manager at TUI Penarth describes how the destination can even cost less than Ibiza and offer the same ‘gorgeous beaches’.

She said: ‘I’ve booked over 1000 holidays to Menorca and it’s only getting increasingly popular as customers are asking for somewhere a bit quieter and more traditional.

‘Menorca has the same gorgeous beaches and weather as Ibiza and Mallorca, but without the busy nightlife and crowds.’

After 26 year sin the travel industry, Claire has plenty of intel to share and explained: ”In peak summer, Menorca can work out cheaper than some of the more established hotspots.

‘A casual meal out for a family of four typically costs less in Menorca, with families often spending around €60-€90 compared with €90-€120 in busier hotspots.

‘And a pint of beer can be a few euros less too.’

The sunny island boasts daily temperatures of around 30 degrees in the summer and has miles of clear turquoise waters to enjoy.

Claire also highlighted how the size of the destination makes it easier for families to travel across.

‘It’s a smaller island, so it’s really easy to get around and airport transfers are short, which is a big plus for families with young children,’ the travel agent explained.

‘The beaches are unspoilt and the atmosphere is laid-back.’

She recommended places like Son Bou, which is ‘the longest beach on the island with soft golden sand and calm, shallow water’.

Aside from families, couples are also being drawn to Menorca’s traditional harbour towns and coastal walks.

Claire recommends heading to one of her favourite spots, Binibèquer Vell, a whitewashed fishing village often compared to Santorini.

She said: ‘It looks like a mini Santorini but without the crowds. It’s one of those places people fall in love with straight away.’

She also recommends exploring the capital, Mahón, which has one of the largest natural harbours in the world.
