If you board any train, tube, or bus in London, you’ll probably spot someone sporting the Stubble & Co Roll Top backpack. The brand has become somewhat of a travel essential for the fashion conscious traveller.

Now, the firm behind this bestseller has launched a brand new bag – and this time it’s aimed at runners.

The Motion Backpack features secure chest and waist straps, as well as a padded laptop sleeve which doubles as a hydration reservoir pocket.

So whether you’re simply jogging home from the office, or undertaking a gruelling marathon, the bag can be adapted to suit you.

Ahead of its release, the Daily Mail’s Science & Technology Editor, Shivali Best, took the Motion Backpack for a spin – here’s why it’s a great option for city runners, and the perfect sibling of the Stubble & Co Roll Top backpack.

Our verdict

This is a fantastic bag for runners who enjoy mixing between quick jogs to or from the office and more intense long runs.

Weighing just 780g when empty, the bag is very light, but with a 20L capacity, it has ample room for your day–to–day items.

Meanwhile, the dual–purpose pocket is big enough to take a 17–inch laptop, or a hydration reservoir.

The colour options are lovely – I’m a big fan of the deep red Magma version, which will ensure you stand out against the crowd.

At £125, the Stubble & Co Motion backpack isn’t cheap, but if you’re looking to invest in an excellent running bag, this could be just the thing for you.

How we test

We test all bags in the same way, putting them through a series of tests designed to assess their performance, ease of use, design and value for money.

This includes wearing them around the office and out and about as intended, and filling them with our everyday items to consider weight and comfort.

All of the products we review get the same treatment, so you’re able to make an informed decision on your next big purchase.

Stubble & Co Motion Backpack reviewPerformance

As someone whose day–to–day bag is the 30L Roll Top, I was initially a bit worried when the Motion Backpack arrived at my door.

Could this smaller, lighter bag stand up against Stubble & Co’s bestseller?

Thankfully, after a week with the Motion backpack, my concerns were quickly put to bed.

With a 20L capacity and no roll top, the bag is smaller than the Roll Top – but for very good reason.

As the name suggests, the Motion backpack is designed for movement, so being compact is essential.

I’ve tested running backpacks in the past, and have experienced rubbing on the back and shoulder, but thankfully the Motion was extremely comfortable.

The bag features a cushioned, mesh panel which is not only comfortable against your back, but also allows for excellent airflow.

What’s more, the chest and waist straps ensure it stays firmly on your body, with minimal bouncing – even on the most strenuous of runs.

One of the features I like the most is the dual–purpose inner pocket, which can be used to carry a laptop or water

One of the features I like the most is the dual–purpose inner pocket, which can be used to carry a laptop or water.

Fully padded, this pocket can take a 17–inch laptop if you’re jogging to or from the office.

Or, if you’re heading out a longer run, you can swap the laptop out for a hydration reservoir – with a pass through for the hose even built into the design!

Of course, if you live in the UK, you might be worried about getting caught out in the rain.

However, you’ll be relieved to hear the bag is crafted from water resistant fabrics, so your laptop or clothes will remain dry inside.

Design

The Motion backpack is one of the best looking running backpacks I’ve seen.

Many options from rival brands look very sporty, and you might not necessarily want to carry them when not jogging.

In contrast, Stubble & Co’s bag is very chic, and would easily blend in with more fashion–focused, non–running backpacks.

I opted for the ‘Magma’ version, which is the perfect shade of deep red.

The Charcoal and Ash versions are also lovely – although I can see the Ash version getting dirty quickly

In terms of pockets, you’re pretty spoiled for choice.

Beyond the dual–purpose inner sleeve, you can pop your things in two inner pockets, one on the front of the bag, and even in pockets on the straps themselves – ideal for things like energy gels.

Value for money

At £125, the Motion backpack certainly isn’t cheap, but does come in below several other popular commuting backpacks.

For example, the Stolt Athlete Backpack is £149, while the Stolt Alpha Backpack is £169.

What’s more, Stubble & Co’s hugely popular 20L Roll Top is just £5 cheaper, coming in at £120.

If you regularly run and are looking for an investment piece, this could be a great option that’s both practical and stylish.

FAQs

Are Stubble & Co bags waterproof?

While the Motion backpack is water resistant, Stubble & Co also offers a range of water resistant bags.

These bags – which you can find here – are made from durable, water–resistant materials with secure zippers and closures to keep your belongings dry.

How do you clean a Stubble & Co backpack?

To remove dust or dirt, use a lightly dampened lint–free cloth. Do not scrub. If necessary, use mild soapy water to remove more stubborn stains.

Leave to dry naturally, removing any excess moisture with a cloth.

Do not machine wash, tumble dry, use strong soap or detergent, apply solvents, iron, starch or leave in direct sunlight for prolonged periods.

You can use a wax leather protector or colour–locking waterproof spray for leathers & suedes, to protect and restore the leather used in the canvas range.

Are Stubble & Co bags lightweight?

Yes. The Motion backpack weighs just 780g when empty, while the popular Roll Top 20L comes in at 1.15kg.
