A fragment of the Eiffel Tower is set to go to auction – and it could be yours if you’ve got the cash

The iconic landmark has looked over Paris for 139 years, standing 1,083 feet tall and surviving two major world wars.

Construction began on the Eiffel Tower in January 1887 and it has since become a huge attraction drawing in hordes of visitors every year.

Mega fans of the impressive structure will be pleased to know they could own a piece of it.

A fragment of the original staircase is set to go up for auction in just a couple of months.

On May 21, Paris-based Artcurial Auction will host the sale of the historic item.

Now, a fragment of the original staircase is set to go up for auction in just a couple of months

In 1983, the spiral staircases that cascaded from the second and third floors were removed and replaced with lifts.

They were split into 24 different sections and one now is located on the first floor of the Eiffel Tower.

Three more can be found in the Iron Museum, Musée d’Orsay and La Villette – all in Paris.

Others are now scattered across the world after being auctioned off, and another is about to be up for grabs.

The piece stands 8.5 feet tall and is being sold by its anonymous owner after sitting in their collection for 40 years.

Artcurial Auction estimates the staircase could go for between €40,000 to €50,000 (£34,700 to £43,400).

It consists of 14 steps that stem from a cross-shaped base and is made from steel and riveted sheet metal.

Artcurial’s Art Deco specialist Sabrina Dolla told Artnet: ‘He’s enjoyed it long enough and now his circumstances are taking him elsewhere.’

According to Dolla, smaller sections of the stairs sell better because buyers are able to fit them in most areas.

The auction house has sold other staircase pieces from the Eiffel Tower in the past and in 2013 one was sold for €212,458 (£184,000).

Section number 13 went for a whopping €523,800 (£454,800) in 2016 and section number four sold for €162,500 (£141,100).

Most recently, section number 17 was snapped up for €253,500 (£220,100).
