A rocket-inspired skyscraper has opened in Morocco, becoming one of Africa’s tallest buildings – and it’s drawing comparisons with Dubai’s famous Burj Khalifa tower.
With many Brits still avoiding holidays to the UAE city as a result of the ongoing Middle East conflict, the ‘dupe’ in the culture-rich Moroccan capital of Rabat is likely to enjoy a busy first year.
While it can’t compete on height with the Dubai landmark, which stands at 829.8 metres, while the shimmering Mohammed VI Tower measures up at 250 metres, it is already a landmark symbol of Morocco.
Rabat’s rocket: The Mohammed VI Tower was officially inaugurated in April this year and soars 250 metres in height
The tower was designed by Spanish architect Rafael de la Hoz in collaboration with Moroccan architect Hakim Benjelloun, and was inspired by a rocket poised for launch, symbolising ‘Morocco’s forward momentum’.
Meanwhile its interior design, led by renowned French designer Pierre-Yves Rochon, reflects a balance between contemporary style and references to Morocco’s cultural heritage.
Like the Burj Khalifa, the $700 million (£524 million) Mohammed VI Tower is also home to a luxury hotel.
The Waldorf Astoria Rabat Salé officially opened in April, a luxurious addition to the Moroccan capital’s growing hotel scene.
The property features 55 suites and rooms that blend timeless elegance with Moroccan refinement. The tower’s luxury hotel offering has plenty to write home about.
Located at the meeting point of the twin cities of Rabat and Salé, it offers panoramic views over the Bouregreg Valley and the Atlantic Ocean.
The property is also home to the luxurious Waldorf Astoria Rabat Salé hotel
The hotel’s mirrored-ceiling swimming pool is the epitome of serenity
There’s four distinct dining experiences, including a signature restaurant by one of the world’s leading chefs.
Peacock Alley, perched on the 30th floor with sweeping 180-degree panoramic views, offers afternoon tea and cocktails.
Aldabaran, the signature restaurant by renowned chef Alain Ducasse, is set to add to the foodie credentials of the building. At Brasserie Magnolia, Moroccan and Middle Eastern flavours will be brought to the fore.
In addition to food and luxurious hotel suites, the tower and Waldorf hotel have a spa with spectacular views.
Rooms have panoramic views of Morocco’s costal capital Rabat
It combines traditional Moroccan wellness rituals, including a hammam and treatments inspired by locally sourced ingredients.
The facilities include seven treatment rooms, including a couple’s suite, a heated quartz sand table and a sauna.
A panoramic indoor pool with a silver-mirrored ceiling, a 24-hour fitness centre and several relaxation areas complete the spa offering.
The hotel also has more than 1,400 square meters of refined event spaces, including a ‘Grand Salon’ ballroom.
