Japan is getting a Pokemon-themed airport to ‘bring hope and joy’ two years after being damaged by a magnitude 7.6 earthquake

You’ve likely heard of themed hotels, amusement parks and restaurants – but what about a themed airport?

Pokemon fans will be in for a treat, as a Japanese airport is set to undergo renovations to become a hub centred around the popular animated series.

Noto Satoyama Airport, which was affected by a 2024 earthquake in the region, will be renamed the ‘Noto Satoyama Pokémon With You Airport’.

The small regional hub only operates flights to and from Tokyo Haneda International Airport.

From 7 July, 2026, it will welcome 111 Pokemon characters, as well as other themed decorations, to its halls.

Pokémon-themed attractions and events are also planned until 30 September, 2029.

The design aims to bring joy to those affected by the magnitude 7.6 earthquake that hit the region two years ago.

‘The imagery, featuring numerous Pokémon flying through the sky, dazzling light, and sparkling rainbows, expresses a longing for the sky, the joy of flying freely, and the “hope” of embarking on a new journey,’ the airport said.

Following a 2024 earthquake, the hub is undergoing refurbishment – with a whimsical twist

In the hub’s atrium, there will be a Pikachu on top of a plane, with plenty of other animated creatures dotted around, euronews reports.

Pillars outside the hub will be brightly decorated.

And it’s not just the decor.

Themed pancakes and speciality drinks will be on offer to purchase at the hub.

Meanwhile, limited-edition souvenirs including T-shirts, keychains, luggage tags and suitcase belts can be bought.

For the Pokemon-obsessed, there are plenty of other themed attractions to peruse in Japan.

You can visit the Pokémon Center Mega Tokyo, a key attraction for fans of the popular video game.

Plus, the world’s first Pokémon theme park opened earlier this year.

Pokemon designs will grace the walls of the domestic airport

Even the airport’s exterior will boast artwork in line with the new theme

Located inside Yomiuriland, it has two immersive zones.

The first is Pokémon Forest, a 500-metre nature trail where visitors can discover more than 600 hidden Pokémon, throughout hilly paths, tall grass, tunnels and rocky trails.

According to the park’s website, this will be a ‘lush woodland where Pokémon thrive in the wild’.

The second will be Sedge Town, featuring themed shops, a Pokémon Centre, parades, shows, and attractions inspired by characters such as Pikachu, Eevee, and more.

The official website described this area as a ‘bustling town where Pokémon and Trainers from around the world meet and forge new friendships’.
