When it comes to travelling, an eye mask is a carry-on essential if you plan to get some shut-eye while on a flight or in a hotel room.

With designs that block out light, you can almost forget you’re on a plane or in a hotel and drift off to sleep as if you’re in your own house.

A good quality, comfortable eye mask can not only help you fall asleep more easily and improve the quality of your sleep, but also help beat jet lag.

Here, I’ve reviewed and rated some of the best eye masks from high street brands like Boots, Marks and Spencer and John Lewis, as well as luxury companies like Dore & Rose.

And with Christmas around the corner, many of these eye masks would make excellent gifts for frequent travellers (or anyone who prioritises a good night’s sleep!)

This is an eye mask I won’t stop talking about, and I think it would make an excellent present – even for the fussiest of people.

The attention to detail with this product did not go unnoticed. It arrived in a beautiful box with information on the product and brand, which is family-run.

The eye mask is made from 19 momme grade 6A Mulberry silk with a soft padding within, which means that it is less dense and therefore lighter than regular silk.

This proves a weightless and therefore more comfortable feel when you are wearing it at night. Grade 6A means that it is the highest quality silk with both ‘6’ and ‘A’ being the highest on their respective scales. It is extremely comfortable with cushioning and an adjustable velcro strap.

The eye mask comes in 11 colours and offers complete blackout due to the wraparound design.

 2. Best luxury: Dore & Rose Deep Sleep Eye Mask

The Dore & Rose Deep Sleep Mask is made from 23 momme Mulberry silk

This is definitely the most highly anticipated eye mask on the list.

At £39, it comes with an expectation of luxury. It is certainly above my budget, so I was very excited to have the opportunity to try it.

The eye mask took slightly longer to arrive than the other items due to it being shipped from the Netherlands, which only added to my anticipation.

Designed in the USA, it is made from 23 momme Mulberry silk. It is very similar to the Hi Silk eye mask in its design with a velcro strap and 360 design.

It is incredibly soft and blocks all light. I found it comfortable to sleep wearing this on my side.

You definitely get what you pay for, making it a great prestige pick.

3. Best on the high street: Boots The Travel Nightshade Eye Mask

Boots The Travel Nightshade Eye Mask is really soft and it blocks out the light, making it perfect for both a flight and hotel room

Boots The Travel Nightshade Eye MaskProduct SpecsMaterial60% Cotton, 40% PolyesterAdjustable strapNoFill material100% PolyesterMachine washableNoReview

Considering the very low price point, this eye mask exceeded my expectations tenfold.

While not adjustable, the strap is tight enough to stay in place without being uncomfortable.

The material is really soft, and it blocks out the light, making it perfect for both a flight and a hotel room.

However, according to the care instructions, it’s hand-wash only, which is less convenient than being able to chuck it in the washing machine.

At just £6, I really don’t think you can go wrong with this option.

 4. Best luxury on a budget: M&S Pure Mulberry Silk Eye Mask

As a mid-range, high street option, the M&S Pure Mulberry Silk Eye Mask combines the luxury of 100 per cent mulberry silk with an accessible price point

As a mid-range, high street option, this eye mask combines the luxury of 100 per cent mulberry silk with an accessible price point.

The eye mask comes in two colours, mink and blue, and features an elasticated band.

My first impression when opening the box was how beautiful the mink colour is. I would say the shade is closer to champagne/ gold, adding to the luxurious feel of the product.

To sleep in, the eye mask is very soft and comfortable and feels much more expensive than it is.

However, a downside is the fact that it is not adjustable. This meant that it was slightly too big and slipped down, letting some light in.

5. Best organic eye mask: John Lewis Organic Mulberry Silk Eye Mask

The John Lewis Organic Mulberry Silk Eye Mask is very comfortable and offers a luxurious spa experience at home.

This eye mask is very comfortable and offers a luxurious spa experience at home.

It is made from organic silk and is Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified. This assures that high social and environmental standards of manufacture have been met across the entire textile supply chain.

However, due to being a light colour and not being adjustable or wrap-around, it doesn’t block out light.

6. Best for eyelash extensions: Smug Cloud Padded Satin Sleep Mask

This Smug Cloud Padded Satin Sleep Mask would be a great option for people who wear eyelash extensions as it has a raised, padded area to protect your lashes

With a wide range of designs, these eye masks would make a lovely present and look great on your bedside table.

You can also buy a matching accessories bag, making it great for travel.

The mask gently curves to sit softly against your face without pressure and is very comfortable.

This would be a great option for people who wear eyelash extensions, as it has a raised, padded area to protect your lashes.

Unfortunately, like most of the other eye masks of this style, it is not adjustable and lets in some light from under the mask.

 7. Best for a flight: Infinity Pillow Bamboo Sleep Mask

Because of its 360 design, the Infinity Pillow Bamboo Sleep Mask blocks out most light and is very lightweight, making it a good option to bring on a flight

Infinity Pillow Bamboo Sleep MaskProduct SpecsMaterial60% Nylon, 40% Bamboo rayonAdjustable strapNoFill material100% PolyesterMachine washableYesReview

Tested by Marti Stelling

From the same company as the viral travel pillow, I had high hopes for this eye mask.

Because of its 360 design, the mask blocks out most light and is very lightweight, making it a good option to bring on a flight.

Unlike most of the other masks I’m trying, it’s made of bamboo rayon and nylon instead of silk or cotton, which meant it wasn’t as comfortable or soft on my skin.

Unfortunately, it is not adjustable and was too big for me, meaning it slipped down and didn’t stay in place.

8. Best for gifting: Desmond and Dempsey Cotton Luxe Eye Mask

DesignThere are lots of different fun patterns to choose between

LightweightThis eye mask is 100% cotton, making it very lightweight

Review

Tested by Marti Stelling

Unlike most of the other eye masks, this is made from cotton instead of silk or satin.

It is lightweight and breathable, which would make it a good option for the summer months.

While I love the variety of patterns on offer, it is not adjustable and lets light in. The white colour of this design also didn’t help when it came to letting in light.

What I do love about this brand is that you can buy pyjamas and eye masks in the same design, which I think would make a great Christmas present.

Our verdict

If I were to buy any eye mask on this list, it would be the Hi Silk Mulberry Eye Mask. I genuinely look forward to putting it on and always get a good night’s sleep wearing it.

I also believe that the Dore & Rose eye masks are worth the hype, despite the steep price tag.

If you’re on a tighter budget, I don’t think you can go wrong with the Boots Travel Nightshade Eye Mask, which is great to wear both on a flight and for sleeping every day.

FAQs

What is the best eye mask to wear on a plane?

For wearing on a plane, I would recommend an eye mask with a wraparound and blackout design to block out light, as well as styles which are lightweight and won’t take up any space in your carry-on.

I would recommend the Boots Travel Nightshade Eye Mask or the Infinity Pillow Bamboo Sleep Mask.

What is the comfiest eye mask?

For comfort, I would recommend looking for an eye mask made from Mulberry silk.

The higher ‘momme’ of silk, the higher the weight, density and durability, which leads to a richer and more luxurious feel.

I would also recommend an eye mask with a wraparound design which are designed for any sleep position.

The Hi Silk Mulberry Silk Eye Mask is made from 19 momme grade 6A Mulberry silk with soft padding, which means that it is less dense and therefore lighter than regular silk.

For a prestige pick, the Dore & Rose sleep mask is made from 23 momme Mulberry silk for maximum luxury.
