Couple move out of rental to live in shipping container – and have saved $400,000 in the process

A couple gave up renting and moved into a shipping container but managed to save $400,000 (£304,458) in the process.

Miriam, 31, and husband Eric Guiterrez, 32, previously lived in Las Vegas and were forking out around $2,000 (£1,523) a month on rent.

The pair were tired of the high cost of living in the country and wanted to be closer to their family.

Despite owning a house in Tijuana, Mexico that they had previously purchased as an investment, it still wasn’t quite close enough to Miriam’s loved ones, Unilad reports.

Eventually, the pair purchased a 200-square-metre plot with the plans to build a new home from a shipping container for just $35,000 (£26,652).

It’s located just five minutes away from Miriam’s family and the talent manager described it as ‘the perfect decision’.

She added: ‘And so far, we have no regrets. We’ve saved well over $400k if we were to buy a home back in Nevada – and it’s like our own little city.’

Miriam noted that their unusual choice of abode ‘never fails to get people’s attention’.

The pair had an interest in renovations before taking on the ambitious project and enjoyed watching YouTube videos of people converting shipping containers.

When their own container home is finished they intend to use it when they visit Miriam’s family and rent it out on Airbnb for the rest of the year.

It currently has running water, electricity and a new roof, as the container didn’t have one originally.

They plan to have an open living and kitchen room.

‘And we’ll have a separate room for the bathroom and bedroom too. We hope that in the roof area we can also install a loft for a second bedroom,’ Miriam explained.

‘We would really love to have a pool. And to get a BBQ too for when we have family over.’

So far, Eric and Miriam have spent $20,286 (£15,448) on the construction work.

This includes $8,108 (£6,174) for the land, $2,500 (£1,903) for the container and $3,600 (£2,741) for the roof.

They have also spent $3,552 (£2,704) on a metal fence around the property, $600 (£456) to install electric and $650 (£495) for water.

Labour costs have come to $164 (£124) so far and walls cost $200 (£152), among other things.

Miriam has called the project a ‘vision’ and hopes to inspire others to do similar.

‘No matter how bizarre they seem,’ she added.
