Tourists have been warned about new drinking laws in Thailand – and the hefty fines they could face if they break the rules.
Travellers visiting the popular holiday destination should take care to inform themselves of the rules, in order to avoid a nasty surprise.
Thailand is known for its buzzing nightlife, including the vibrant bars in Bangkok and full-moon parties across its islands.
But now visitors need to pay attention to where and when they drink.
New laws come into force on November 8, 2025.
The ban on alcohol sales between 2pm and 5pm, and again from midnight to 11am, remains in force.
Buying or being served a drink during these hours – even at convenience stores – could lead to fines.
Advertising or promoting alcoholic beverages is also prohibited, except for factual or educational purposes authorised by the Ministry of Public Health – so you should be careful posting any branded content online.

Recent changes to the country’s alcohol laws aim to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for holidaymakers.
Anyone consuming alcohol outside of the permitted hours could receive a fine of up to THB 10,000 (around £230).
Travellers are encouraged to drink sensibly, be respectful of the local community and take advantage of the many other activities this incredible country has to offer.
Helen Wheat, Thailand destination specialist at Travelbag, said: ‘Thailand has updated its alcohol drinking regulations, introducing fines of up to THB 10,000 (around £230) for drinking outside permitted hours, starting November 8.
‘For most visitors, this shouldn’t massively affect your trip, as bars and restaurants already follow these rules by restricting the sale times of alcohol, so it’s business as usual.’
Alcohol sales remain permitted during the usual hours, from 11am to 2pm and between 5pm and midnight.
It’s a good idea to check the opening hours of a bar or restaurant before you visit.
Visitors are also advised to stick to licensed venues during permitted hours.
