How Stranger Things has started a travel boom to a magical waterfall in Iceland – and all the filming spots you can visit

The Stranger Things finale has captivated fans around the world as the smash-hit series comes to an end after almost 10 years.

Even though the show was set in a fictional town, one filming location in particular has caught the attention of many.

Haifoss waterfall, which features in iconic Stranger Things scenes, has seen a huge surge in Google searches from interested travellers, according to research by Tripadvisor company Bókun.

The terms ‘stranger things waterfalls,’ ‘Haifoss twin waterfalls,’ and ‘Best time of the year to visit Iceland’ all experienced a 5,000 per cent search increase in the past month.

Meanwhile, ‘Haifoss’ saw a 1,863 per cent rise and ‘stranger things’ a 150 per cent increase. It follows a cameo appearance in the finale of the sci-fi series.

Fans have even shared videos of themselves online visiting the iconic site and the travel experts believe the interest could boost tourism to Iceland this year.

The impressive attraction in question is a twin waterfall which can be found near the Hekla volcano in southern Iceland.

Some people suggest Haifoss waterfall could even contain a smaller, third waterfall, which plays into the storyline of Stranger Things, but it isn’t confirmed.

The waterfall is the fourth highest in Iceland and stands 122 metres tall along the Fossá river.

The twin falls can be quite difficult to reach and The World Travel Guy recommends taking a four-wheel drive vehicle, though he also warns the road is rough and has numerous potholes.

It takes around two hours to drive there from Iceland’s capital, Reykjavik, and fortunately there is a car park area.

Fans can venture to plenty of other Stranger Things filming spots and experience the beloved series in real life.

The fictional town of Hawkins was actually set in Atlanta, Georgia and tourists can stroll though the suburbia imagining they are on set.

Radio station WSQK 94.5FM, known as The Squawk, features in season five and was built in the Chattahoochee Hills, Travel + Leisure reports.

The rolling countryside city is located in Fulton County, Georgia and has plenty of walking trails to explore.

Dustin Henderson, portrayed by Gaten Matarazzo, goes to college in season five and the institution exists in real life.

The scenes are set in Oglethorpe University, in Georgia, which boasts impressive Gothic architecture and specialises in liberal arts and sciences.

Italian restaurant Enzo’s also features in the series and is a restaurant in Norcross, Georgia.

Called Dominick’s, it has seen Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder) and Jim Hopper (David Harbour) play out their tricky romance and ‘Enzo’s’ was also used as a codename of Russian prison guard Dmitri Antonov.
