How you can now stay in Doris’ iconic house from Gavin and Stacey

For many Gavin and Stacey fans, a trip to Barry Island is not complete without a visit to Trinity Street, the location of one of Britain’s most recognisable TV homes.

Fans saw the final chapter of the show come to an end in last year’s Christmas special, which sees the character Smithy (James Corden) accept Nessa’s (Ruth Jones) proposal.

The Gavin & Stacey finale pulled in a staggering 12.5million viewers – the highest Christmas Day TV audience in 16 years.

The unsuspecting Welsh seaside town of Barry Island has seen a huge tourism boost thanks to the series, with official tours taking guests to filming locations like the Pleasure Park, Marco’s Cafe and the amusement arcade where Nessa worked in the series.

And now, one of the iconic homes in the series is opening its doors to visitors.

The terraced house on Trinity Street, which appeared throughout the much-loved BBC series, is now available to rent through Sykes Holiday Cottages, offering fans the ultimate nostalgic trip to the heart of Barry.

In the show, the house was originally home to Doris, Gwen and Stacey’s elderly next-door neighbour.

In the 2019 Christmas special, it was explained that after Doris (Margaret John) passed away, the property was inherited by Gavin and Stacey, where they are raising their family.

Doris’ doorstep was the backdrop for some of the show’s funniest scenes, including the iconic lines: ‘I’m very discreet,’ and ‘Will you join us in a mint Bailey’s for Christmas?’.

The home has been restored into a modern seaside retreat that nods to its on-screen past. It could be the perfect Christmas escape for fans of the show.

Inside you’ll find a kitchen fitted with everything you need for your stay – including a hob for whipping up one of Gwen’s signature omelettes.

There’s a cosy lounge with bright orange chairs and a working fireplace.

Upstairs are two bedrooms, one with a double bed, and another with twin beds and a bunk, which has room for three, along with a bathroom.

The property, named Lush House, sleeps up to five people and in November, the house can be booked out for £631 for seven nights, which works out as £18 per person.

The private garden offers the perfect spot for a morning coffee, evening glass of wine or even a barbecue on warmer days.

It comes as earlier this year, the owner of the real-life Marco’s Cafe, where Stacey worked in the series, said the show’s success had led to his family business ‘taking over’ Barry Island.

Earlier this year, the owner of the real-life Marco’s Cafe, where Stacey worked in the series, said the show’s success had led to his family business ‘ taking over’ Barry Island

Marco Zeraschi, who appeared in the show, said fans from all around the world visit to see the sights featured in the series.

The businessman now has a monopoly in the Welsh seaside town, owning coffee shops, a burger bar, an ice cream parlour, as well as a souvenir shop, perfect for fans of the BBC show.

Marco recalled how he was approached by a production company back in 2006 who offered to pay him to keep his business open for filming during the winter months, gushing he had no idea that ‘a couple of hundred quid’ would change his life.

Barry Island has become such a popular destination that Prince William and Princess Kate even visited back in 2020, followed a year later by then-PM Boris Johnson.

Marco told The Sun: ‘What Gavin and Stacey has done is put Barry Island, everyone knows it now, and it shows it as a really positive, funny place to live, it’s given it this ambience’.

‘People from all over the world come here because of the show, Australians absolutely love it and thousands have come to Barry to see where it was filmed’.
