Hygiene experts reveal how to clean your luggage properly after every holiday

When you get home from a trip, you might give your suitcase a quick wipe down, empty its contents into your laundry basket and call it a day.

But travel gear can collect lots of dirt and bacteria, especially if you’re travelling around the world.

Now, hygiene experts have revealed the best way to clean luggage properly after every holiday.

The first key step? Dry out toiletries and cases.

The trick to keeping your toiletry containers fungi-free is never packing them wet, The Washington Post reported.

Jessica Ek, a spokeswoman and cleaning expert with the American Cleaning Institute and Keith Roach, an internist at Weill Cornell Medicine and New York-Presbyterian have shared their advice to travellers.

Regarding packing your belongings, the experts have advised washing and fully drying items beforehand.

Jessica said: ‘If you put them away damp, that can really get bacteria, mold or other things growing that you really don’t want.’

Next up is washing your neck pillow.

‘The real issue is you’re getting dead skin and oil from your skin, and it’s not going to be pleasant,’ Keith said. ‘It won’t feel good, and it won’t smell good.’

You can wash your neck pillow’s removable cover if it has one, or just wash the whole pillow.

Another essential step is to clean your phone.

Expert Jessica advises wiping it down with a clean, dry cloth, followed by a disinfectant wipe. Then let it air dry.

For earbuds, she suggests using a disinfectant wipe or a little rubbing alcohol on a cloth. Keep liquids away from the openings or connecting ports.

Also, you should use an antibacterial wipe to clean your case, and then vacuum your luggage to clear the inside.

For lingering smells, Jessica said to apply a paste of baking soda and water.

Finally, you must wash your water bottle out with soap.

‘You really should be cleaning it while you’re travelling and not just a week later when you get home,’ Jessica said.

She added: ‘You need water, soap and friction to reach some of those harder parts.

‘Use a pipe or tube brush to get around narrow accessories such as a straw or spout – or just avoid straws entirely.’
