As the Easter bank holiday weekend approaches, around two million Brits are expected to travel abroad, meaning airports will be busier than usual.
With the surge in passengers, avoiding long queues and navigating airport security efficiently can make a world of difference in ensuring a stress-free start to the holiday.
Shahzad Ali, CEO and security expert at Get Licensed, the UK’s leading security training company, has shared his top tips to ensure holidaymakers breeze through security, as well as providing insight into safety protocols.
He said: ‘Airport security can be a nerve-wracking experience, especially for those who have never been through it before. I want to reassure you that it is much easier than you might first expect, as long as you are prepared for the process.’
Ali stressed the importance of preparation when going through airport security, adding: ‘You will want to make sure you have all your liquids in a clear plastic zip-lock bag, and your electronics towards the top of your hand luggage, easily accessible.’
Ali warned of common habits that could attract unnecessary attention from security, saying: ‘Your demeanor can often determine whether or not you will be picked up by security for questioning or further checks.
‘Hold back the yawns and excessive laughter as these can draw attention to you and make you appear suspicious.’

Arrive early
To reduce stress and nerves, it’s crucial to arrive early and give yourself plenty of time by at the airport.
Ali said: ‘If you have checked luggage, you will want to arrive at least three hours before your scheduled flight, this will allow for any queuing time at bag drop and security.’
Prepare your bags and choose a suitcase wisely
Ali stressed the importance of weighing your luggage beforehand to avoid delays or extra charges.
For security, opt for a common-looking suitcase, ideally a slightly worn one, to avoid drawing attention.
A high-quality padlock is also essential for keeping your belongings secure, while attaching an identifier, such as a ribbon or sticker, can help avoid your luggage getting mistaken for someone else’s.

Be smart with queues
Ali advised: ‘Opt for the queues with more business passengers compared to families.’
Passengers who are travelling for business are also likely have less luggage for security to check through, and therefore take less time than families or bigger groups going on holiday.

With airports being bustling environments, it’s important to remain vigilant and stay aware of your surroundings.
Ali cautioned: ‘Keep an eye on your belongings, including your phone, wallet, and passport, and report any suspicious activity to airport staff immediately.’

Stay connected
Before heading to the airport, ensure your phone is fully charged and that you have a fully charged portable powerbank in case of emergency.
You will also want to ensure you have all important phone numbers saved to your mobile and that everyone in your group has one another’s contact information.
It can also help to connect to airport Wi-Fi in case you aren’t able to get signal.
Know the exits
Ali advised familiarising yourself with the exits and emergency escape routes once at the airport.
Knowing the quickest way to evacuate from various areas, such as check-in counters and boarding gates, can be crucial in an emergency situation.

From health advisories to weather warnings, staying up to date on travel restrictions and delays can help you pre-plan for any issues you might face at the airport.
