Inside the brand-new European train station designed by a world-renowned sculptor and dubbed a ‘mythical inferno’

This is the brand new European train station that looks more like a portal to another world, dubbed ‘mystical inferno’, than a place to catch a train.

Designed by world-renowned sculptor Anish Kapoor, who is also behind Chicago’s famous Cloud Gate and London’s Olympic Park tower, The Monte Sant’Angelo Station has opened just outside Naples in Italy.

He was first asked to design the station back in 2003. More than 20 years later, it’s finally open, and commuters can’t believe their eyes.

The jaw-dropping entrance is made from weathering steel, swelling up from the ground in a huge oval shape that looks like a gateway to the underworld.

Step inside and you’ll find escalators plunging down to the platforms – though once you’re below, it’s business as usual with tiled walls and trains rolling in.

Mr Kapoor said: ‘In the city of Mount Vesuvius and Dante’s mythical entrance to the Inferno, I found it important to try and deal with what it really means to go underground.’

And it’s not just a pretty face – the new stop is part of Naples’ massive urban and cultural regeneration project.

The station links the western side of the city with the centre and connects to the Cumana and Circumflegrea railways

Built on the University of Naples Federico II campus, the station links the western side of the city with the centre and connects to the Cumana and Circumflegrea railways, the Montesanto funicular and Line 2 of the metro.

The station actually has two striking entrances: the main university one, which balloons up from the ground, and the Traiano entrance, which twists inside out with smooth tubular steel.

It’s the latest addition to Europe’s growing collection of jaw-droppingly beautiful metro stops, joining the likes of Lisbon’s colourful Olaias station and London’s futuristic Westminster Tube.

But Naples may just have stolen the crown – with a station that makes your morning commute look like a trip into another dimension.
