Inside the secret language used by cabin crew, and what to watch for on your next flight

A flight attendant has revealed the secret language easyJet cabin crew use to communicate on board – including hilarious animal gestures that represent different meals.

An anonymous member of the airline’s cabin crew recently appeared in a video posted to the carrier’s Instagram page, where she revealed flight attendants are not always able to speak to one another directly.

According to the cabin crew member, the combination of engine noise, cabin size, and the need for crew to communicate discreetly around more than 200 passengers requires a ‘covert’ system of non-verbal signs.

These gestures allow flight attendants to communicate quickly and quietly – which is particularly useful during meal service.

The cabin crew member explained: ‘As cabin crew you may be aware, but we do have a secret language on board – a way of communicating to each other when we want food items.

‘And with over 200 passengers on board, the plane is very long, so you may have noticed that if you would like a ham and cheese sandwich we do a croque monsieur.’

The flight attendant demonstrated a crocodile motion with her hands to signal the ‘croque monsieur’ sandwich, before extending one arm like a chicken wing and twirling her hands together to signify a chicken wrap.

As for a calzone, cabin crew will typically place the heels of their hands together before bringing their fingers to a close, which indicates the ‘fold’ of the baked Italian turnover.

In the video’s comment section, dozens of viewers shared their astonishment, as one wrote: ‘Absolutely iconic!’

A second commented: ‘I saw a crew member do this to another crew member, I realised it was internal sign language!’

Another added: ‘I often watch the crew doing this trying to work out what they’re on about lol.’

Meanwhile, one flight attendant shared: ‘We do another sign for pizza. Like a triangle above our heads. Tuna we make a fish move with our hands.’
