High in the rolling hills of the Italian province of Ascoli Piceno, there is a tiny village that not many will have heard of.
Steeped in medieval history, the picturesque settlement is dotted with buildings that reflect centuries of architectural influence, from the Middle Ages through to the Renaissance and Baroque periods.
Perched atop a hill, Ripatransone boasts sweeping views across the surrounding countryside – earning it the nickname the ‘Belvedere of the Piceno’.
Despite its lofty reputation, the village is home to just over 4,100 residents and is criss-crossed by a maze of winding, narrow streets.
And hidden among them is one particularly famous passageway: an alley so slender it measures just 43cm at its narrowest point.

The small passageway doesn’t even have a name, according to Italia.it – and though it is fully paved, it might be a squeeze to walk down it.
Ripatransone’s neighbouring towns, Termoli and Citta della Pieve, have both tried to claim it as their own.
The alley even has its own Tripadvisor page and has become quite a tourist attraction, with visitors eager to see the intriguing spot.
Dubbed ‘The Narrowest Alley in Italy’ on the travel site, it has been rated 4.2 out of five stars.
One tourist described it as a ‘not to be missed’ site and penned: ‘If you visit this beautiful village, among the many things to see, you definitely have to go to this alley. Not to be missed….’
Someone else commented, ‘An original element in a very beautiful village. It’s fun to go up and down this narrow passage which is considered an alley due to the way the floor is constructed.’
Another gushed over the views of the characterful village and said: ‘Worth the trip to squeeze into the narrowest street in Italy. Set in a gorgeous hilltop hamlet with incredible views over stunning scenery.’
Despite being very narrow, Ripatransone’s alley isn’t the smallest in the world.
A tiny street in Reutlingen, Germany holds that title according to the Book of Guinness World Records. Called Spreuerhofstraße, it is only 31cm wide.
Ripatransone’s tiny street does, however, hold the title of Italy’s smallest alley from the famous book, according to Visit Ripatransone.

Aside from its narrow passageways, Ripatransone has plenty of character and charm.
The tourist site describes the village as a ‘treasure trove of history, culture and nature’.
There are plenty of welcoming guesthouses and apartments to stay in, as well as restaurants offering authentic, local cuisine.
Ripatransone even officially joined the ‘Club of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy’ back in 2024, in recognition of its incredible architecture, food and history.
