A ‘perpetual tourist’ is someone who lives in Costa Rica but is not a (legal) resident. Which means they have to leave every 90 days to usually, Nicaragua or Panama in order to keep this passport (visa) current. Gringo’s that live in Costa Rica, call this, ‘turn and burn’. Perpetual tourism has been alive and well for as long as I’ve been here (15 years) and way before that. The ‘powers that be’ in Costa Rica have accepted this way of living in Costa Rica because they understand the advantages, although it does have a few disadvantages as well. If Costa Rica is becoming an option for the folks who don’t like the direction their own country is going, (United States, Canada, Germany, Australia) for whatever reason, you need to know about the ‘perpetual tourist’, whether you will get your residency (sooner or later) or not. Residency takes awhile, you will have to leave. What are the cheapest options when leaving Costa Rica. Panama? Nicaragua? Mexico? What are the pros and cons of each country? Do you need a negative covid test? This video, ‘Leaving Costa Rica Every 90 Days – Cheapest Options – Hacks – Considerations the 101’, will offer some considerations for you and your family when you do have to leave for your 90-day turnaround.
Entry Requirements for Costa Rica- In order to meet the requirements, adults must:
-Have received an approved vaccine: Moderna, Pfizer, AstraZeneca, or Johnson & Johnson.
-The last dose of the schedule must have been administered at least 14 days before entering Costa Rica.
-Proof must be demonstrated with a document that includes the person’s full name, date of each dose, formula, and lot number.
-For U.S. visitors, the Covid-19 vaccination record card meets the requirement.
For those who are vaccinated, you only need the ‘Health Pass’ 1. Electronic epidemilogical Health Pass form can be found here- *Complete this form in the 48 hours before arriving in Costa Rica.
**IF you are NOT vaccinated, you will have to buy your ‘Traveler Insurance’ first since the Health Pass asks for the policy number and such. This form produces a QR code that you will be asked to show upon arrival. **Be AWARE- Some airlines may ask for this at check-in.
2. Travel Insurance must meet these requirements and if you use an international policy you must present a letter stating:
-Guaranteed coverage of medical expenses in the event of becoming ill with COVID-19 while in Costa Rica, for at least $50,000 USD.
-Minimum coverage of $2,000 USD for lodging expenses issued as a result of the pandemic. -Validity of the policy throughout the planned stay in Costa Rica. **Costa Rica’s travel insurance policies tend to be on the pricier side, you can get cheaper, don’t use the CR insurance if you don’t have to.
👉Trawick International is an international policy that offers affordable prices that meet Costa Rica’s entry requirements. You can find them here- 👈 Another travel insurance option is SquareMouth.com
*Although I heard about these guys months ago, I have ZERO affiliation with them, so I can’t answer anything. Do your homework. If you want to make sure YOUR international policy meets Costa Rica’s requirements, go here and ask them- seguros@ict.go.cr
3. Proof (airline ticket OR BUS TICKET IN THIS CASE) that you are leaving Costa Rica within 90 days. NOTE: Tourist visas are typically good for 90 days but be sure your insurance policy matches the amount of days you want to stay in Costa Rica. *If you purchase a policy that only covers you for 10 days, you will not get stamped for 90 (they know this manipulation, don’t try it.)
