Major American airline to offer FREE drinks on board – even to economy class passengers

Most of us enjoy a beverage during a flight – whether it’s a crisp Diet Coke or a nice glass of wine.

But on board plenty of airlines, purchasing a drink can cost a small fortune.

Now, a major airline has announced it will offer free drinks on board.

And the offer stands for passengers in economy class.

Air Canada is rolling out free alcohol on flights in economy class to lure more passengers.

It comes after a backlash against extra fees for baggage and legroom, EuroWeekly News reported.

The Montreal-based carrier is now the only traditional North American airline offering complimentary beer and wine in economy on all routes.

Scott O’Leary, vice president of loyalty and product, explained that food and drinks have a large influence on traveller happiness compared to other services.

He said waiving alcohol costs is cheaper for the airline than eliminating baggage fees, which cover handling expenses.

Luggage charges, he explained, cannot be easily waived or given to everyone without impacting the overall ticket prices.

He added: ‘As part of our commitment to elevating the onboard experience, we’re delighted to introduce even more exciting new options to our menus.

‘These upgrades offer something for everyone and proudly showcase Canadian brands so that our customers can sit back, relax and kick-start their travels no matter where they’re going.’

The perk is targeted at routes where US passengers connect through Canada to Europe or Asia.

Air Canada is offering complimentary beer, wine, and exclusive Canadian-made snacks for all customers on flights, including routes to Mexico and the Caribbean.

US competitors including American, Delta and United only serve drinks on flights beyond a certain mileage.

Meanwhile, low-cost carriers such as Spirit, Frontier and JetBlue charge for alcoholic beverages.

The airline has also announced it will hand out complimentary snacks.

MadeGood Mornings Cinnamon Bun Soft Baked Oat Bars and Greenhouse Ginger Defence Wellness Shots join their offering – on morning flights before 10am.

Plus, it will dish out more Canadian-made choices, from Summer Fresh Hummus & Crackers and Quaker Maple & Brown Sugar Oatmeal Cups to new TWIGZ Sour Cream & Onion Pretzels and Smarties.

It also offers non-alcoholic beer Heineken 0.0.
