Major UK airport begins £60m upgrade ahead of new Ryanair, easyJet and Jet2 flights

A major UK airport has started a £60million upgrade as Ryanair, easyJet and Jet2 announce new flights.

Newcastle Airport announced its ‘Masterplan 2040’ earlier this year.

The hub aims to expand and become the top choice for passengers in the region, and connect the North East to ‘an exceptional range of destinations’.

Other plans include an expansion of the airport’s runway, according to the Express, as well as adding 20 additional aircraft stands.

Newcastle Airport also aims to become a Net Zero Carbon Airport in the next ten years.

The expansion comes after airlines recently revealed they would be launching new routes from the hub.

In August, Ryanair announced it would be basing a third aircraft at Newcastle for winter 25/26.

The Boeing 737 8-200 will provide 120,000 more seats to the airport for the winter.

Ryanair launched five new routes for the colder season, too, including flights from Newcastle to Brussels, Budapest, Gdańsk, Malta, and Wrocław.

Additional flights have also been added to the existing routes for Alicante, Dublin, and Kraków.

It was also announced, last month, that easyJet would be opening a new three-aircraft base at the hub from March 22, 2026.

Passengers will be able to enjoy 11 more routes from Newcastle via easyJet from next summer.

This includes flights to Antalya and Dalaman in Turkey, Rhodes and Corfu, Faro in Portugal, Malta, Prague, Reus and Nice.

Holidaymakers hoping to jet off to North Africa will also be able to do so via direct connections to destinations, including Sharm-El-Sheikh in Egypt and Enfidha in Tunisia.

Jet2 has also opened up routes to Budapest and Marrakech.

Flights to Budapest depart every Thursday and Sunday.

Other plans include an expansion of the airport’s runway, as well as adding 20 additional aircraft stands

Meanwhile, trips to Marrakech are scheduled every Tuesday and Friday.

When the hub’s ‘masterplan’ was first announced, Nick Jones, Chief Executive at Newcastle Airport, said: ‘This Masterplan sets out our bold and ambitious vision for 2040 and paves the way for the future of Newcastle Airport and the North East region.

‘Through significant investment in infrastructure, expanding our route network and progressing with our Net Zero ambitions, we are laying the foundations for sustainable growth, while enhancing our economic contribution to the region.

‘In the coming months, we will be consulting on the Masterplan as widely as possible, inviting feedback from members of the public, local businesses and stakeholders from across the region to ensure everyone has an opportunity to help shape the future of the Airport.’
