A passenger has revealed the reward he received when he saved someone’s life while on a cruise.
Reddit user Valkia said the experience took place on his first cruise – starting from Singapore on Mein Schiff.
During the trip, a member of his group went into cardiac arrest.
Valkia and his group kept him alive while waiting for medical support.
Valkia explains: ‘In a turn of very fortunate events in the same area was a couple of guests, one a nurse and the other a surgeon who dashed into action initiating CPR.’
As a result, Valkia says he received a rare plaque of the ship by the captain.
Valkia explained the chain of events in the harrowing experience, saying: ‘I went on my first cruise at the beginning of the year in South East Asia, starting from Singapore via Mein Schiff (TUI) across 13 days.
‘We planned to surprise my partner’s parents who were taking the cruise to celebrate their retirement, so we excitedly appeared in the background of a photo to reveal ourselves. The parents were also joined by my partner’s uncle and his partner too, making our group six.’

He added: ‘Anyhow, after a very exciting first few days, we were sitting at drinks in the evening when the uncle started touching his back, arm and chest.
‘The other caveat is that I’m on a German cruise, and being English, I can understand enough of the language to get by, but I’m not fluent.
‘The uncle told the others (in German) that he was feeling OK, and not to worry but watching his body language and expressions I became concerned, and told him to follow me to reception as we went looking for the board doctor to check him out.
‘As we arrived at the reception, he went into cardiac arrest and fell to the floor, which was pretty scary.
‘The not so cool part about all of this was my lack of knowledge in how to deal with the situation at hand.’
Fortunately, medically trained passengers and staff were nearby.
Valkia wrote: ‘The cruise staff sounded Star Code (medical emergency), and a short time later the cruise medical crew took over and managed to get him stable. He was wheeled down to the medical center, which we were able to visit a few hours later.
‘Early the following morning he was shipped out to a local hospital on Koh Samui, where he stayed for the next few weeks.’

He went on: ‘A few days later we had an invite taped to the door to meet the captain on the bridge along with the other two who helped save the Uncle.
‘We chatted to the senior doctor, and he mentioned that this was his final cruise before retiring, and that in his 40 years being a doctor he’s not seen a situation in which someone having a heart attack is in the right place with people that can keep them alive long enough before the doctors take over and it was a nice final win.’
Valkia was then handed a plaque from the captain to thank him.
‘Naturally, we couldn’t enjoy the cruise fully after this happened,’ Valkia said, ‘but we were happy that he survived, and had a super nice hospital room on the island.
‘Looking forward to my next one, with less drama.’
