Rare chance to buy a Scottish island for as little as £120,000

A private island off the coast of Scotland has gone on sale for just £120,000.

The rugged, uninhabited island off the coast of the outer hebrides could be yours for less than the cost of a one-bed flat elsewhere in the UK.

Gasker Island stretches about 70 acres and boasts a rocky coastline, fertile grassland, many lochans – small freshwater lakes – as well as a seal colony.

Currently the only property on the island is a small, unmanned lighthouse, owned and maintained periodically by the Northern Lighthouse Board, the general lighthouse authority for Scotland and the Isle of Man.

Situated five miles away from the nearest inhabited island and 75 miles from any train station the home could be paradise for an introvert.

However, it does still remain an inhospitable place to reach – with tide conditions often hindering travel to the island – and with no amenities.

Galbraith, the property company managing the sale, said while there are no services or dwellings present on the island, there may be scope for a modest cabin or hut subject to the necessary planning permission.

The company advertised the island saying there is potential for it to become ‘a truly unique retreat.’

Given the island’s location, it has extraordinary views across the islands of Lewis and Harris, Scarp and Taransay – where Castaway 2000, that propelled Ben Fogle to TV stardom, was filmed.

Arriving onto Gasker can be achieved by small craft in one of two sheltered bays, subject to tide conditions, at Geolar to the north or Geodha Ear to the south.

Gasker is known for its grey seal breeding colony. The island is a designated site within the Small Seal Islands SSSI for this species.

Claire Acheson, handling the sale on behalf of Galbraith, said: ‘This is an exceptional opportunity to secure a private island in one of the most dramatic and unspoilt settings in the British Isles.

‘Gasker offers not only breathtaking scenery and wildlife, but also the potential for a truly unique retreat.’

There is little information on the island of Gasker.

Previous reports show conservationists were concerned about the building of the lighthouse and the potential impact on the seal colony on the island.

Historically, residents of Scarp island, which sits about five miles to the north-east of Gasker – Scarp was made famous by its Rocket Post experiments – visited the small island to hunt for the mammals.

The nearby Harris is the southern and more mountainous part of Lewis and Harris, the largest island in the Outer Hebrides.

It is known for sandy beaches like Luskentyre and Scarista on the west coast, rugged mountains in the north and its world famous Harris Tweed – luxury handwoven cloth.
