Revealed: Easter childcare costs rival the price of a family holiday in Tenerife

Rather than fork out hundreds of pounds on childcare over the Easter holidays, travel experts reveal that families can holiday abroad for the same price – where childcare is virtually free.

Over the two-week break, which runs this year from 30 March until 10 April, parents could face nearly £700 in childcare costs alone – before food, activities and days out are pencilled in.

With average childcare costs hitting around £346 per child, many families could see the school break swallow up hundreds of pounds ahead of peak holiday season in July and August.

However, travel experts at First Choice have highlighted how the same amount could instead be spent on a short-haul Easter getaway to Tenerife – where meals, kids’ clubs and sunshine are included in one upfront price.

From just £252 per person, families can lap up the 23C spring sunshine, take dips in crystal-blue waters. explore the outdoors, and get stuck into chocolate-making workshops.

Entry-level packages offer affordable escapes for those looking to save for the summer, while all-inclusive options help families manage costs by paying upfront and avoiding daily spending, which can quickly spiral during short-haul trips.

Resorts like Playa Olid in Costa Adeje offer a range of activities and amenities for families with school-age children, such as access to pools and entertainment like games consoles and ping pong.

Better yet, parents can relax while their children are occupied at kids’ clubs – all included in the upfront price.

Away from the resort, families can spend quality time together with days out at popular beaches across the island, from Los Cristianos and Playa de las Américas.

For a dose of adventure, the volcanic terrain of Teide National Park is an exhilarating place to explore. For a more laidback trip, boat trips are available for whale and dolphin-spotting.

Families looking to leave behind bulky Easter egg chocolate on their travels are in luck, as Tenerife offers a range of elite chocolate-making experiences to get stuck into over the holiday.

In the Tenerife Chocolate Workshop, families can roast, taste and create three personalised chocolate bars from scratch in a three-hour class, which includes a certificate and unique keepsakes.

Artisan LAVA adds a luxurious, volcanic twist to chocolate making, allowing families to produce sweet treats inspired by the island’s lush, dramatic landscapes, such as lava-shaped truffles and blackened cocoa nibs.

The island also offers a sweet twist on traditional Easter treats with La Palma desserts such as ‘Príncipe Alberto’ – indulgent chocolate cream with ground almonds and hazelnuts, and layered with sponge coffee-soaked biscuits.

Kevin Nelson, Managing Director at First Choice, said ‘Easter at home isn’t always cheaper. When you add up childcare, food, and days out, a couple of weeks in the UK can quietly rival the cost of a holiday abroad.

‘With a package holiday, parents get sunshine, meals, and kids’ clubs included – and know exactly what they’re spending upfront.’
