Revealed: The most popular month for Brits to travel in 2026

From winter getaways to summer holidays, Brits love to jet off to various destinations around the world all year-round.

But there is one particular month that looks to be the most popular time for holidaymakers to get away.

ABTA’s recent Travel Trends report for 2026 revealed September is when people most frequently book a trip.

According to the travel trade association, many holidaymakers recognise it as a good time to explore Europe and other destinations across the globe.

They book trips for September knowing that great, warm weather is still likely, and there will be good value breaks on offer after the summer holidays end.

ABTA has dubbed the trend ‘Super September’ as holidaymakers travelling during the month has increased consistently over the years.

The trend has gone from 17% in 2023 to 24% in 2025, outstripping the main summer months.

It’s expected to continue increasing into next year, too.

Travellers also increasingly try to add a sense of adventure and fun to their trips.

Common activities like cycling and hiking are great options to do in September when the weather is still relatively dry and mild, and it’s perhaps even better to do such things then instead of during the hot summer months.

ABTA also dubbed 25 to 34 year olds ‘Travel Trendsetters’ due to the age group going on holiday the most.

Around 84 per cent of this group are planning to travel abroad in the next 12 months, which falls well above the average of 70 per cent.

Overall, they take an average of 5.5 holidays a year, including 2.2 overseas.

They also take more holidays than anyone else – an average 5.5 holidays overall, including 2.2 abroad.

Their commitment to going away is set to continue, with 49 per cent planning to spend more money their trips next year.

Holidaymakers aged between 25 and 34 are shifting cruise trends, too with 19 per cent going on one in the last 12 months. This topped any other age group, even the over 65s.

Graeme Buck, Director of Communications at ABTA – The Travel Association, said: ‘Travel is a constantly evolving industry – presenting both opportunities and challenges for our members.

‘What is clear from our research is that the demand to travel remains strong – with more people looking to travel abroad on holiday in 2026.

‘The way people are travelling is changing, whether that’s embracing different types of trips or times of year to travel.

‘ABTA travel companies are responding to these changing demands – working to make people’s holiday wishes a reality, all with the added peace of mind of being under the ABTA umbrella.’
