You’d expect that as Christmas approaches, hotel prices would soar as Brits book last-minute holidays.
But in fact, in some cities, hotel rooms have dropped by more than half price.
Five big UK cities have seen prices slashed ahead of the festive season.
As for the biggest price drops? They were seen in Bristol.
Bristol was crowned the champion of savings, with average rates plummeting by a massive 55 per cent to just £70.93, down from £157.62 in 2024, according to research.
There are other ways to save cash if you head to the city this Christmas.
For free entertainment, wander through the Bristol Christmas Market in Broadmead to soak up the atmosphere and enjoy the general entertainment at no cost.
You could also visit the Clifton Suspension Bridge, offering spectacular views that are always free.

You can also explore the free collections at the Bristol Museum & Art Gallery or M Shed museum.
The research, from Hotelplanner.com, showed that five major cities have seen a reduction of up to 55 per cent compared to December 2024 – with Bristol at the top of the list.
Also on the list is Newcastle, which offers the lowest average rate on the entire list at £52.61, thanks to a 43 per cent reduction from last year’s rate of £92.31.
A must-see here is department store Fenwick’s annual Christmas Window Display, a Geordie institution that draws crowds for its free, spectacular reveal.
You can also browse the stalls at the Newcastle Christmas Markets around Grey’s Monument and enjoy the free festive light displays throughout the city centre.
Next up is Birmingham, a major city break spot with the popular Frankfurt Christmas Market.
It boasts a 40 per cent price cut, bringing rates to an average of £101.45, down from £169.04.
The famed Birmingham Frankfurt Christmas Market is free to wander, offering a festive atmosphere and the chance to browse hundreds of stalls.
Also on the list is Newcastle, which offers the lowest average rate on the entire list at £52.61, thanks to a 43 per cent reduction from last year’s rate of £92.31
You could also seek out the characters on the free Brum’s Christmas Reindeer Trail scattered across the city centre, a brilliant family activity, or enjoy a walk through Lickey Hills or Kings Heath Park.
Edinburgh joins the rankings, significantly more accessible this year compared to 2024’s average £309.70 per night, with a 35 per cent reduction to £201.36.

Finally, Oxford sees a considerable saving of 25 per cent, with average rates now sitting at £127.38 compared to last year’s £169.79.
Even London is offering meaningful relief, with average rates down 14 per cent to £293.09, making the capital more accessible than last year’s £340.66 average room night cost.
