When it comes to holidays, travelling can be expensive.
Obviously, you have to pay for the flight – but once you’re at your destination, getting around can burn a hole in your pocket too.
Thankfully, Spain has come up with a solution – and the country’s prime minister, Pedro Sanchez, has announced a national public transport pass that will allow people to travel anywhere in the country by bus or train for a flat monthly fee of €60 (£52.75).
For those under 26, the pass will cost just €30 (£26.37) a month.
It will allow people to ‘travel anywhere in the country’ on middle-distance and suburban trains, as well as on national buses.
The new pass will come into effect in the second half of January.
Sanchez said the transport pass is intended ‘to change the way Spaniards understand and use public transport for ever’, according to The Guardian.
He added the move was ‘proof of his administration’s commitment to improving the everyday lives of Spaniards’.

The prime minister claimed the scheme could help some workers cut their monthly travel costs by as much as 60 per cent.
He added: ‘We’re talking about 2 million people who will be paying less each month to get to work, to get home or to do their day-to-day stuff.
‘That’s what governing is about: making the important things easier for ordinary people.’
Spain isn’t the first country to have implemented this sort of pass, as Germany, Switzerland, Hungary and Portugal all already have similar schemes.
Germany introduced its seasonal pass, the Deutschlandticket, in 2023, with it originally costing €49 (£43) a month, and covering regional rail, metro, trams and bus travel across the country.
The fee rose to €58 (£51) at the beginning of 2025 and is set to increase again to €63 (£55.40) in 2026.
Meanwhile, the Hungary Pass is a monthly transport ticket that can be used throughout the country, costing around €49 (£43) for 30 days, with students receiving a massive 90 per cent discount.
Charging €20 (£17.60) a month for its train tickets, Portugal’s transport pass is the cheapest.

However, it’s only available to Portuguese residents, as you need to show a national tax number to purchase it.
The most expensive unlimited travel pass is the GA Travelcard for Switzerland.
It offers unlimited travel on trains, buses, and boats across the country for a month – but costs €470 (£413) for adults and €315 (£277) for young people.
In pricey Switzerland, tourists are better off taking advantage of the Swiss Travel Pass Flex, where you can choose three, four, six, eight, or 15 days within a month for unlimited travel starting at €315.
