A new study has unveiled the best cities in Europe for a one-night break.
Destinations were ranked based on factors, such as; flight time from the UK, distance from the airport to the city centre, how walkable the area is, and the cost of a centrally located hotel room.
With extreme day-tripping and one-night city breaks becoming increasingly popular for those with limited time and budgets, the list of 50 cities across the continent aims to help travellers get the most out of a short stay without the added stress.
While French cities dominated the ranking, other destinations across Germany, the Netherlands, Slovenia and Croatia featured extensively in the list.
Taking the number one spot is Rennes, France, a compact yet culturally rich city in Brittany less than an hour away from London via plane.
Visitors can explore its medieval old town, vibrant food scene, and half-timbered houses – all without the need for taxis or public transport.
On top of that, the average cost of one night in a central hotel is around £69, making it a high-value option for budget conscious travellers.

In second place is Nantes, another French gem where visitors can stay for as little as £79 per night
In second place in the index, carried out by travel platform, Holidu, is Nantes, another French gem where visitors can stay for as little as £79 per night.
The city is slightly longer to reach than Rennes with an average flight journey of 66 minutes, yet it’s still highly accessible and offers a walkable city centre where major attractions, such as Château des Ducs de Bretagne, are within easy reach on foot.
Bremen, in northern Germany, ranks third, with a flight time of around 85 minutes from London, and just a five-minute journey from the airport to the city centre.
In the city’s Altstadt (Old Town), visitors can navigate its fairytale streets and UNESCO-listed buildings – though it’s worth noting the accommodation is slightly pricier at around £124 for a night’s stay.
Basel in Switzerland takes the fourth spot, scoring high for mix of walkability, cultural richness and Swiss, French, and German influences despite it being more expensive – with an average central stay costing up to £270.
With historic museums, river views and a stylish city centre, it’s an ideal destination for day-trippers wanting to cram a lot of activities in within a short space of time.
Rounding out the top five is The Hague in the Netherlands, with a speedy 55-minute flight from London, and an even quicker 17-minute transfer into the city.
Known for its stately architecture, royal history, and relaxed atmosphere, The Hague offers a unique Dutch experience without the crowds of Amsterdam. It’s also easy to navigate, with major sights all within a 20-minute walking radius.

Sixth place goes to Luxembourg City, which offers a blend of medieval architecture and modern life, followed by Slovenia’s capital, Ljubljana, in seventh, known for its fairytale setting, riverside cafés, and green spaces.
Taking the eighth spot is Toulouse in southern France. Dubbed ‘La Ville Rose’ for its pink-hued buildings, the city is packed with character and history, and it also offers a balance of affordability and accessibility.
Ranking ninth is one of the most budget-friendly cities on the list: Croatia’s capital, Zagreb, which boasts low hotel prices and a walkable old town filled with museums, markets and cafés.
Completing the top ten is Düsseldorf, Germany, a city that blends old and new. Known for its fashion, art, architecture, Altbier taverns and numerous museums, Düsseldorf is also quick to reach and easy to explore on foot.
