But there is one location in particular that has proven to be the most popular destination for a festive break.
According to new data, Buxton is the top spot to head to in the cooler months.
Nestled in the picturesque Peak District, Buxton is bustling over the festive period, with Christmas markets and sparkling decorations.
Pantomimes are performed in the opera house and there are plenty of independent cafes and restaurants to find a delicious meal.
Ambleside, in Cumbria, placed second in the data by Sykes Holiday Cottages.
With stunning lake views and even a waterfall to enjoy, it’s not surprising the staycation spot is so popular.
The town centre glistens with lights during the festive period and visitors can opt for a winter lake cruise, too.

Bourton-on-the-Water, known as the ‘Venice of the Cotswolds’, ranked third.
The small village has a population of around 3,500 residents and features a range of independent cafes and shops that draw in hordes of visitors.
During Christmastime, the area is beautifully decorated and boasts an impressive Christmas tree rising from the River Windrush.
Castleton in Derbyshire is another festive location that has proven popular for a winter getaway in fourth place.
Many shopfronts in the village are adorned with decorations and visitors can enjoy winter walks to famed hill, Mam Tor, and through limestone gorge Winnats Pass.
Elsewhere, in North Yorkshire, Skipton attracts tourists with its festive cheer.
There are regular markets held in the town that are perfect for finding unique Christmas presents.
What’s more, the high street is often decorated with twinkling lights during the festive period.

A seasonal cruise that travels along the Leeds and Liverpool Canal even includes a Christmas dinner and makes for a perfect winter activity.
Ludlow, in Shropshire, ranked sixth and impresses with its Christmas carols, scenic walking routes and charming places to stay.
Another Yorkshire spot, Whitby came seventh and Broadway in Worcestershire ranked eighth.
Bowness-on-Windermere, in Cumbria placed ninth and Beadnell in Northumberland was 10th.
