The seaside village in Scotland with amazing coastal views – and just one street of homes

If you’re visiting a coastal village in the UK, fish and chips, souvenir shops and holiday cottages galore are likely to be core components of the landscape.

But not so much in Pennan.

On the coast of Aberdeenshire lies the tiny village you have likely never heard of, a remote Scottish location located underneath steep cliffs and on the edge of the North Sea.

Its most unique feature? It has just one row of houses.

The tiny fishing village has a rugged charm, decorated with white cottages that overlook the edge of water – quite literally just one street’s worth of them.

The 19th-century village is perhaps best-known as the backdrop for 1983 film Local Hero, and visitors can make a call from the red telephone box featured in the film.

Many cinema enthusiasts are lured in to visit the village precisely to see the phone box.

One visitor said of the town: ‘Pennan was used to film ‘Local Hero’ and the iconic red telephone box is still there on the pretty harbour.

‘It’s a pleasant place to walk around, and we had a cuppa from the little shack on the harbour front. Well worth a visit as you are touring around.’

Another wrote: ‘Great spot. Visited after watching Local Hero and wanted to see the town and the red phone box.

‘Beach was spectacular. Houses were picturesque. Public toilets at the end of the harbour were the best public facilities encountered in Scotland. Well done.’

It’s also great for exploring the outdoors, with a pebble beach and small harbour right in the heart of the town.

There are excellent opportunities to spot dolphins and grey seals basking on the rocks, too – so it’s not just the unique street on offer here.

According to Visit Aberdeenshire: ‘The rugged coastline, especially dramatic during winter storms, offers stunning views and a truly atmospheric experience.’

One Tripadvisor review wrote: ‘Pennan is a village with a lot of charm, down a cliff. Stopping by is nice.’

There’s plenty more to do there, too. Pennan Harbour is the crown jewel of the town.

Pennan Beach and Cullykhan beach nearby are great options in the summer – and can be atmospheric even amid rain.

Pennan Beach in particular is well worth a visit.

One reviewer said: ‘The views are impressive and it has a nice harbour next to the beach.’

A second wrote: ‘Beautiful little village, came on a rainy day but we were not disappointed. We walked the small beach. Full of pebbles, large and small all beautiful and individual in the apperance. We walked to the Harbour and back.

‘Coastal Cuppie has a little hut by the harbour but due to the Autumn weather this is now located in Pennan Hall, fully recommend.’

Another added: ‘A fabulous day out from Aberdeen, so peaceful, friendly people and added bonus of seeing the dolphins too. Great for kayaking and a real beauty spot.’

To get there, Pennan is about an hour’s drive north of Aberdeen.
