These are the best off-grid areas to stay in England

Instead of action-packed holidays to places far away, some travellers are looking for something simple.

Screen-free breaks deep in nature allow people to fully disconnect from the world and all of their stress – but where can holidaymakers head to?

New research in Camplify UK’s Analogue Escape Index reveals the top places for an off-grid break in England.

The index delves into how little phone signal the area might have, campsites without electricity and light pollution, amongst other factors, to highlight spots that might allow holidaymakers to experience nostalgic trips away from screens and tech.

Devon ranks top and scores highly for its abundance of National Trust properties, ‘Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty’ and National Parks.

Its bountiful opportunities for off-grid adventures include an expansive coastline and lots of green space, including Dartmoor National Park.

There are plenty of non-electric campsites to choose from, earning it a top score of 128.

Cumbria placed second in the index for its ‘away-from-it-all feeling’ and abundance of walking routes.

The rolling Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors are perfect locations for finding a non-electric campsite or going on a relaxed road trip.

There are countless hiking routes too, and scenic country roads to wind along.

Other destinations in the index include Cornwall, which placed fourth, and has coast and countryside for off-grid adventurers to enjoy.

Elsewhere, Somerset ranked fifth and scored 87, followed by Wiltshire in sixth place scoring 82.

Dorset placed seventh, Northumberland eighth, Gloucestershire ninth and East Sussex rounded off the top ten.

‘There’s something really refreshing about heading off in a campervan with no rigid plan, finding a quiet campsite and swapping screen time for sea views or hilltop sunsets.

‘It gives you the freedom to slow down, change route if you fancy it, and enjoy a simpler kind of travel.’
