Travel experts find out which direction around the world is the fastest using major airlines

If you want to get to the other side of the world, you’d better be prepared for a long journey…but what’s the quickest route?

Travel and points experts, Nicky Kelvin and Liam Spencer, from The Points Guy, decided to race each other, taking flights in opposing directions from London to Fiji.

It’s not the first time The Points Guy brand has challenged its experts to pit airlines and routes against each other for speed – but this is the longest race to date.

Nicky headed eastbound from the London capital via Cathay Pacific, while Liam went west on American Airlines. Both finished their journeys on Fiji Airways.

Starting under blues skies at Piccadilly Circus in the heart of central London, the pair began their respective journeys, which it was estimated would take up to 30 hours.

Nicky jumped on the London Tube and the Elizabeth Line to Heathrow Airport, with his first leg spent in Cathay Pacific’s swish new business-class A350 Aria Suite.

Head to head: Nicky and Liam, left, shared their respective journeys via social media, posting a video on YouTube of the 24 hours they spent racing to Fiji

He connected at Hong Kong International Airport – with enough time to grab a shower – before boarding a Fiji Airways’ A330 flight.

Meanwhile, Liam took the premium nonstop Heathrow Express train service to board an American 777-300ER flight, also travelling in business class, bound for America’s west coast.

Liam cleared Los Angeles International Airport quickly before taking the final leg, a Fiji Airways’ A350 flight.

So, after more than 24 hours at 30,000ft, who touched down in Fiji first? It was extremely close, with just 30 minutes in it.

Both arrived at Nadi International Airport and, just like a real-life episode of Race Across the World, tensions arose as the pair were almost neck-and-neck at one stage, with Nicky literally running to the finish line.

The winner? It was Liam, with his westbound journey.

The pair shared their journeys via social media, posting a video on YouTube yesterday via the channel The Points Guy.

In the video, Nicky announces: ‘It’s race day, and this one is bigger and longer than we have ever done before.’

Let’s race! The pair embarked upon a journey that would mean 24 hours of travel to go from London’s Piccadilly Circus (pictured) to the balmy island of Fiji

They share the ins and outs of their journey, including the luxury experiences they experienced that helped them on their way.

The video has quickly racked up more than 28,000 views, with fans taking to the comments section to share their thoughts.

One wrote: ‘Good video. Well done,’ while another added, ‘Love you guys. This was such a fun video and still gave great information.’

A third chimed in: ‘The race is on! Always such fun and so compelling. This video had the excitement and informative style we love when Nicky and Liam compete.’
