UK’s best and worst hotel chains revealed – as Wetherspoons is ranked high

It’s regularly ridiculed for its mediocre food and dreary interior design.

But the hotel arm of cheap and cheerful pub giant J D Wetherspoon has come fifth in a ranking of the UK’s best hotel chains.

Wetherspoons, which charges £70 a night on average at its 55 hotels, received four stars for value for money, customer service, bed comfort, cleanliness and a number of other categories in the survey for Which? Travel.

One guest commented that the hotel was ‘clean, comfortable and good value’.

The top spot in the annual poll went to Coaching Inn.

With a customer score of 81 per cent and an average room price of £128, it received four or five stars for all categories.

InterContinental, Hotel Indigo and Sofitel were also in the top five, with average prices of £326, £115 and £278 respectively.

They all ranked five stars for categories including cleanliness and bed comfort.

At the other end of the scale, Britannia was named the UK’s worst hotel chain for the 12th year running.

With rooms costing an average of £84, Britannia scored one star out of five for the quality of bedrooms and bathrooms.

The chain, which has more than 60 hotels, only received two stars for the rest of the eight categories surveyed, including cleanliness, customer service, breakfast quality, bed comfort, value for money and description matching reality.

Its website boasts ‘real value for money, both for individuals and for companies looking to save on quality accommodation’.

But the reality is starkly different. One Britannia customer at the Grand Burstin Hotel in Folkestone called the hotel a ‘total dive’.

Another said they had three nights booked but left after one because of the poor service, room and food.

Days Inn was the second worst hotel ranked in the annual survery, with a customer score of 54 per cent.

The 4,631 surveyed also deemed Ibis Budget, Village Hotels and Travelodge to be among the worst hotels in the UK.

Interestingly, the top five all beat major hotel brands such as Marriott and Hilton, which came in ninth and 12th place.

Rory Boland, editor of Which? Travel, said: ‘A night away should be a real treat but with hotel prices climbing, finding a hotel chain that consistently offers comfort, good customer service and a charming location at a fair price has become harder.

‘The good news is we’ve found that whether you’re after a boutique stay in the Brecon Beacons or a budget break in Broughty Ferry, travellers can still get a great experience at the right price by staying with better brands.’

The Daily Mail has contacted Britannia for comment.
