Venice tourist falls in canal after Google Maps gives wrong directions

Since Google Maps arrived on the scene, travellers have become more and more reliant on the tool to navigate while abroad.

Indeed, many of us don’t know what we’d do without it.

How did we cope in the days of handheld maps?

But the app can often make mistakes and lead us astray, as one tourist discovered the hard way.

Wiktoria Guzenda, a Polish tourist, put too much faith in the app while navigating the streets of Venice – leading to a nasty surprise.

Wiktoria was wandering the picturesque city, following its winding waterways and canals.

But she was using Google Maps to guide her – and the route took her straight down a set of steps and into the water itself.

Wiktoria shared a video of the mishap on her Instagram account @wika.we.wroclawiu.

She wrote: ‘When Google Maps says go straight… but you’re in Venice.’

She posted footage of herself following the steps down into the canal, where she falls into the water.

Wiktoria added, ‘Be careful,’ as she wiped herself clean – and showed cuts and scrapes on her legs from the fall.

The video has racked up an impressive 254,700 likes.

Viewers took to the comments to share their thoughts – with some mocking Wiktoria’s mistake.

One commented: ‘Soooo, what did she think would happen walking down stone steps into the water.’

Another retorted: ‘What did you expect while walking into the water?’

Meanwhile, a third added: ‘I think it has become almost impossible to count how many times this happens to tourists in Venice and how many people post about it on Instagram.’

Another chimed in: ‘Venice water is FILTHY. There is a reason nobody is allowed to swim in the canal’

But others were quick to jump to her defense.

One viewer wrote: ‘Y’all, she obviously wanted to stop at the last step and ended up falling in. She was just wanting a cute video and likely cut herself on the sharp shellfish that post up along the Venice waterways. Poor girl.’

And another said: ‘Man these comments are prime examples that a woman will be hated for literally anything.

‘She slipped, laughed at the silliness of it despite her getting hurt, and pretty much every comment I see are of people judging her for a silly slip up. Probably should question why your first response was to judge another person.’
