Warning for travellers after budget airline ‘shredded’ passenger’s luggage

A traveller has issued a warning after turning up to baggage claim to find their bag and the items inside, worth £1,500, were ‘shredded’.

The Reddit user u/Dazzling-Fan-6526 posted to the discussion page r/Ryanair.

The tourist, who was flying to Stansted from Nice on a Ryanair flight, wrote: ‘I whizzed through security at Stansted and waited for my bag on the conveyor belt.

‘I waited and waited. Nothing. After 45 minutes, the bag board said completed on our flight.

‘I went over to the Ryanair helpdesk fearing my bag had been lost somewhere along the way.

‘Luckily I keep the bag tag receipt and the kind lady behind the counter was able to see the bag was somewhere in Stansted. Which I thought was good news.

‘She then told me to go look on all the other belts as it may have just been thrown on one of them.

‘After another 20 minutes of searching I couldn’t believe my eyes she walked over holding all the pieces of my bag clutching all my stuff in her arms.

The Reddit user u/Dazzling-Fan-6526 posted to the discussion page r/Ryanair with the title ‘Ryanair shredded my bag!’

‘My initial reaction was utter shock. It honestly looked like it had been mauled by a tiger.

‘Her reaction was much the same she kept apologising and saying she had never seen anything like this before.

‘She dumped my stuff down and I started to see the extent of the damage to my belongings.

‘My shoe had been sliced up, shirts looked like they had been burned and ripped up.

‘My boxers were shredded. The bag itself was butchered. Cables torn open. My drone controller smashed to bits.’

The user claimed they were told to fill out a form which indicated every piece of clothing and equipment that had been damaged and send it off within 48 hours.

‘I tried to pick up the bag to leave once all the paperwork had been done and things were falling out everywhere,’ the user wrote.

‘I had a long walk to my car. The lady offered me a bin bag for all my belongings which I accepted and threw all my belongings into.

‘And like a depressed Father Christmas I threw the sack of perished items over my shoulder and walked out of the airport.’

‘The following morning I spent a couple of hours doing as instructed, filling out the forms, submitting all of my receipts for the items and putting it all together exactly as I was asked.

‘I submitted the form. The total amount owed to me including the cost of the bag itself was £1,500.

‘And I’ve heard absolutely nothing. Not a peep. No one has been in touch, not an apology. Nothing. It’s absolutely shocking that a company can destroy someone’s personal belongings and take no accountability.

‘I allowed a couple of weeks between follow up emails. Then I threatened to take my experience online, now I want to out them nationally.’

The top comment reads: ‘Have you spoken to your travel insurance? I can’t see Ryanair not paying you, however those Rains bags are quite soft and not the most durable.

‘They may argue you used unsuitable baggage for such expensive items. Just keep that in mind. Baffled by how it ended up in that state!’

One user replied: ‘Looks like it got stuck on the side of a conveyor then the moving conveyor belt shredded it. You can see where the toothbrush, which is hard plastic, has been ground away.’

Many users were baffled by the degree of damage the bag sustained.

One commenter wrote: ‘That is some truly stunning damage.’

According to the Civil Aviation Authority, when hold luggage is lost, delayed or damaged, airlines are liable for your losses.

However, there are no rules which fix the amount of compensation you should receive.

It will depend on the value of what you have lost and the maximum will be around £1,000, however, it would be very rare for you to receive this much.

Ryanair told The Daily Mail: ‘We are unable to comment on the basis of an unsubstantiated Reddit thread.’
