Travellers have been warned over an overlooked mobile phone rule at airports.
Your phone could be confiscated if you do not abide by the regulation.
It’s as simple as ensuring your device has enough battery to be able to turn on.
Airlines permit certain electronic devices in cabin baggage – such as mobile phones, laptops and tablets.
Whether you’re taking just a single device or a whole load of them, you’ll need to make sure they are charged before heading through security.
If any of them have a dead battery, you could be faced with consequences – the last thing anyone wants before a flight.
Security staff at airports are permitted to ask you to turn your devices on and confiscate them if you can’t, as authorities can deem a non-functioning device a security risk.
The GOV.UK website explains: ‘Make sure your electronic devices are charged before you travel. If your device does not switch on when requested, you will not be allowed to take it onto the aircraft.’

Most airlines enforce these rules, including such carriers as Ryanair and EasyJet.
British Airways explains: ‘You can generally take electric and electronic items in your hand or checked baggage, but you need to follow specific safety instructions.
‘Airport security staff may ask you to turn on electronic or battery-powered devices, such as phones, tablets, e-books and laptops, to demonstrate they function.’
The BA website says: ‘If you’re not able to do this, you will not be able to take your device with you. Please ensure that any items in your hand baggage are fully charged and switched on before you arrive at the airport.
‘If your device is not charged, please place it in your checked baggage.
‘If you are connecting, make sure that you do not deplete power in your devices during the first part of your journey as charging points at airports might be very limited and you may need an adapter.’
The same rule applies with TUI.
TUI’s website says: ‘If you’re carrying any electronic devices in your hand luggage that are capable of holding a charge, you’ll need to make sure they’re fully charged when you go through airport security.

‘This is part of new security measures that have been introduced by airports in the UK and abroad.
‘We recommend you keep things like mobile phones switched on until you board the plane, as there might be more checks at the departure gate.’
The rule, recently reported by the Manchester Evening News, applies across airlines.
It’s worth making sure your phone is charged before heading to the airport to avoid any unpleasant consequences.
