Why Gen Z are ditching pints for smoothies and juices at the airport

For many people, an airport pint is an essential part of any trip.

Whatever time your flight may be, you might be keen to head to the airport’s pub for a drink before your holiday.

But it has been revealed that Gen Z are ditching pints at the airport – in favour of healthier options.

Four in 10 Gen Z travellers – people born from the mid-1990s to the early 2010s – are now choosing juices and smoothies over alcohol, new research has revealed.

A survey of 1,073 UK travellers by Avanti Travel Insurance shows a sharp generational split in food and drink choices at airports with younger flyers embracing wellness and flexibility.

Meanwhile, older generations stick with coffee, alcohol and traditional mealtimes.

Travel expert Sarah Rodriguez, working with Avanti Travel Insurance, said: ‘Airport dining is no longer one-size-fits-all.

‘Gen Z treat airports as 24/7 wellness hubs – grabbing a smoothie or substantial meal at any time – while older travellers still prefer coffee and more traditional meal patterns.

‘Millennials, interestingly, remain the biggest airport drinkers, leading the charge on pints at any hour.’

The study found only 27 per cent of Gen Z choose beer or lager before boarding compared to 36 per cent of Millennials, and 25 per cent of Boomers (60+).

The alternative drinks they are reaching for vary.

According to the research, 68 per cent reach for water.

That is in comparison with 35 per cent of Boomers and 63 per cent of Millennials.

And 41 per cent opt for smoothies or juices (vs 6 per cent of Boomers and 36 per cent of Millennials).

Plus, 32 per cent choose energy drinks (vs just 2 per cent of Boomers and 29 per cent of Millennials).

Coffee and tea remain steady favourites but grow more popular with age – from 44 per cent of Gen Z to 64 per cent of Boomers.

When it comes to alcohol timing, Millennials are the most relaxed – 30 per cent say ‘any time is fine’ for airport drinking.

That could mean a 6am pint, or a 9pm glass of wine.

Gen Z, meanwhile, have more varied behaviours: 17 per cent are happy with a pre-10am drink, yet 10 per cent avoid alcohol altogether.

Boomers are the most likely to abstain, with nearly a third skipping airport drinks altogether.
