Many families have jetted off on their holidays inside a Boeing 737 since the 1960s.
Typically used for short-haul journeys the commercial jet has dominated the skies until recently.
For decades the Boeing 737 has been the world’s most popular plane, but now another aircraft has taken the crown.
The Airbus A320 is leading the way, according to aviation analytics firm Cirium, Business Insider reports.
Saudia Arabia low-cost airline Flynas recently purchased a new A320.
This totals to 12,260 bought across airline companies and overtakes the number of Boeing 737s.
There have been 12,259 delivered since the model first took to the skies in 1967.
It’s an impressive feat for Airbus, which has been making planes since the 1970s. The company’s first aircraft, the A300B1, was launched on October 28, 1972.

Airbus was created to offer European competition to American companies that were more dominant in the business.
The A320 was released with groundbreaking fly-by-wire tehcnology in 1987.
It brought great success for the company and was the best-selling jetliner aircraft of all time.
In 2014, the A320NEO was developed, boasting a new engine that reduces fuel burn by 15 per cent.
However, the recent takeover is thought to be down to Boeing’s issues with the 737 Max.
The aircraft had been at the centre of several disasters over the past few years, including an Alaska Airlines flight in January 2024 where the door plug of the plane blew out just minutes after take off.
The same model was involved in two crashes just four months apart which killed more than 300 people.
In 2018, the Lion Air crash and the Ethiopian Airlines disaster were both caused by the same sensor malfunction and the 737 Max was grounded for some time.

Demand for both aircrafts has grown in recent years as increasing numbers of holidaymakers take to the skies.
Airbus has continued to rival Boeing, and in September delivered 57 A320s, according to Business Insider.
Meanwhile, Boeing received 43 orders for 737s.
The Daily Mail approached Boeing and Airbus for comment.
