Why you should always pack a rolling pin when going on holiday

When it comes to packing for a holiday, the kitchen is the last place most people would think to look for carry-on essentials.

But according to one thrifty traveller, a rolling pin is a must-pack item for going on holiday.

Nina Malkin told Next Tribe: ‘No, I don’t do baking on vacation, but I often wake up with leg cramps and sleep with a rolling pin at my bedside.

‘It isn’t especially heavy and doesn’t take up that much room in my suitcase. Although I bet housekeeping folks at hotels wonder.’

According to Moyer Wellness, a rolling pin is ‘basically a handheld foam roller’ – but much simpler to use.

For many travellers, flying can cause swelling, joint stiffness and muscle aches due to poor posture in cramped seats, dehydration from dry cabin air and changes in cabin pressure.

A rolling pin can help release muscle tension and improve circulation to aid recovery.

To alleviate aches and pains, roll the roller across the painful or stiff area for about a minute, spending extra time over tender areas. Avoid rolling over bony areas.

Foam rollers require an active approach, having your bodyweight work against it while you put forth effort to move on top of it.

With a rolling pin, you can roll it against sore muscles it while seated, making it a practical item to put in your carry-on bag.

It can also be used for reflexology by rolling it under your feet from the heel to the ball of your foot.

If the sensation of the rolling pin is too intense, you can place a rolled-up towel over the top to make it softer.

To save space, you can use a plastic children’s rolling pin, which can alleviate pain in a targeted area.

It comes after we revealed a tennis ball should always be packed in your carry-on luggage.

The small item can come in handy to help keep passengers healthy during the journey in several surprising ways.

Easy to pop in a backpack, a tennis ball can be used to improve circulation and reduce pain and tightness.

Instead of carrying a heavy, and sometimes bulky, massage gun, simply rolling a tennis ball along your body does the same job.

The technique can help increase blood flow, and loosen up any pesky muscle tightness.

It can be used by applying gentle pressure and rolling up and down.

Body parts, like thighs, ankles, legs, shoulders and wrists, might feel the most relieved from the tennis ball method.
