World’s top 10 solo travel destinations revealed by new study – as spot with 71p beer and a hotel stay for just £5 comes on top

Solo travel has surged in recent years, with hordes of holidaymakers choosing to jet off alone.

A new study by long-haul travel specialists Travelbag has revealed the top 10 solo destinations in the world.

After analysing various factors including safety, cost, weather, visitor acceptance and language data, the best locations were pinpointed across the globe. 

Hanoi, in Vietnam, ranked first and boasts an impressive daytime safety score of 82.

What’s more, the capital city is very cheap to travel around, with a one-way public transport ticket costing just 25p. 

Beer works out to be 71p and the average temperature in peak season is a warm 27 degrees. 

Those looking to stay in the city can find a hotel for as little as £5 a night in December, as per SkyScanner.  

Colombo, in Sri Lanka placed second and proved to be even warmer than Hanoi with temperatures of around 29 degrees.

It’s also the second cheapest out of the ten for travel – working out at just 14p for a one-way ticket on public transport. 

Named the ‘must-photograph’ travel destination of 2019, Colombo had a decent safety score too of 76 out of 100.

Another Sri Lankan destination, Kandy, ranked third and was the cheapest spot overall for transport – costing just 12p.

A peaceful and charming place to visit, Kandy has plenty of tea plantations and tranquil lakes to enjoy. 

Siem Reap in Cambodia ranked fourth and a beer there costs just 74p, while public transport works out at 74p too.

The average temperature during peak season is around 26 degrees.

Following in fifth place was Grand Bay in Mauritius. The dreamy destination has a safety day score of 85 and public transport is affordable at 76p. 

Chiang Mai in Thailand placed sixth and boasts the highest safety score out of the top ten at 93 out of 100. 

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia followed in seventh and Zanzibar in Tanzania placed eighth. Male, in the Maldives came ninth and Phuket ranked 10th.

Helen Wheat, the southeast Asia destination expert at Travelbag commented: ‘Southeast Asia is ideal for solo travellers, offering affordability, ease of navigation, and a welcoming atmosphere year-round. 

‘Visiting outside of peak tourist months, typically between June and August and then between December and February, means fewer crowds and better value for accommodation and activities.

‘The tropical climate ensures plenty of sunshine, while established transport and digital nomad infrastructure make independent travel easy. 

‘Beyond convenience, the region also offers luxury options, from high-end resorts and boutique hotels to wellness retreats and fine dining, letting solo travellers indulge while exploring.’
