Cointreau opens its working distillery to the public for the first time since 1849

A popular liqueur brand is inviting cocktail lovers to experience a rare getaway inside the home of the Margarita. 

Since its creation in 1849, Cointreau has become the most well-known premium orange liqueur.

Also known as triple sec, every bottle of the alcoholic beverage has been produced in the same private chateau in the Loire Valley, France, for the last 175 years.

The historic House of Cointreau has never been open to the public before.

But now, Cointreau is opening its estate and working distillery up for an exclusive weekend, offering a glimpse behind the scenes.

One lucky winner and three guests will be taken to the 12-bedroom La Richardière – the former Cointreau home – where they’ll spend three days immersing themselves in contemporary French cocktail culture.

The trip will consist of two nights staying in Paris and Angers.

Across the three-day trip, the lucky winner will get stuck into a hands-on Margarita masterclass and indulge in seasonal French dining with local talent.

Led by master distiller Carole Quintons, a guided distillery tour and tasting will take place at the site, followed by a masterclass on Margaritas, where guests will learn how to perfect the iconic cocktail with Cointreau’s Ambassador Kevin Suiero. 

As for dining, guests will tuck into fresh, seasonal dishes specifically curated to complement the notes of Cointreau. 

Afterwards, guests are free to explore the 12-bedroom château’s expansive grounds and surrounding Loire Valley countryside at leisure. 

Crafted in 1948 by Margaret Sames, the original Margarita consisted of tequila, fresh lime, and Cointreau, with the latter the only ingredient specifically named in the recipe.

Today, the Margarita remains one of the world’s most iconic, top-three bestselling cocktails in premier bars, maintaining its reputation as a classic.
