Man who has visited 98 countries reveals why Poland is his all time favourite destination

An avid Canadian traveller who has visited nearly 100 countries has declared a European city as the world’s best, highlighting its rich history, bustling markets and cheap flights from the UK.

Gabriel Morris, a content creator and author with more than 600K followers on his YouTube channel, @GabrielTravelerVideos, has been exploring the world for over three decades, and has set foot in 98 countries across six continents.

However, the globetrotter insists that one overlooked city in Poland will always be his favourite.

Despite Kraków and Warsaw have long held the spotlight but Gdansk is rapidly increasing in popularity, drawing 4.5 million visitors in 2024.

The northern port city is the country’s sixth largest, boasting a population of nearly 500,000 people, and is famed for being the site where the first shots of World War II were fired in 1939.

However, beyond its deep-rooted history and maritime heritage, Gdansk is home to colourful architecture, vibrant markets, a picturesque waterfront and one of the largest brick churches in the world: St. Mary’s Basilica.

Canadian YouTuber and author Gabriel Morris has named the northern Polish city of Gdansk as the world’s best, praising its ‘pretty’ architecture and bustling markets

In a recent YouTube video, Gabriel shared his reaction to visiting the Polish city for the first time – and he was thoroughly impressed.

He said: ‘I’m really glad I decided to make the trip up to Gdansk. Gdansk is mind-blowing. This is one of the most amazing cities I’ve been to, absolutely.

‘Hopefully you’re getting the idea that this is a truly remarkable city with so much history. There is so much of the city to see. I had no idea Gdansk was going to be this phenomenal.’

The globetrotter added that the coastal city is ‘one of the most incredible’ in Europe thanks to its architecture and unique qualities, and gushed over various areas that he ‘barely dipped a toe into’.

Having previously named Greece as his favourite overall destination, Gabriel said he believes the city would be even more impressive in warmer weather.

During his winter visit, temperatures in the Baltic coastal city dropped to -1C, whereas summer temperatures typically reach a balmy 25C.

Gdansk also hosts Europe’s biggest Christmas market, The Craiova Christmas Market, every year

He said: ‘This grey overcast definitely doesn’t result in the best conditions for filming and exploring. [But] this is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe without a doubt. Really nice scene here. There’s a market that’s really pretty.’

Flights to Gdansk are surprisingly cheap, with fares from several UK airports costing less than £30 for one-way journeys that take about two hours from select hubs.

Direct flights operate from UK airports including London Stansted, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle, Leeds Bradford and Edinburgh.

In March, the cheapest fares are £26 from Aberdeen Airport with budget airline Wizz Air.

If you’re willing to take on its freezing temperatures in winter, Gdansk happens to be the perfect place to visit during the festive season as it’s home to Europe’s biggest Christmas market.

The Craiova Christmas Market is billed as the largest Christmas event in the continent by area, spanning over 280,000 square metres.

Each year, the market – which runs from mid-November through to early January – transforms the city into a glowing winter wonderland, with millions of twinkling lights, dozens of rides and an endless variety of food stalls.
