Fiona leaves floods, power outages in Puerto Rico

Hurricane Fiona hit Puerto Rico hard, leaving damage and people without power or water for days after.The southwestern part of the island was hit particularly hard, and residents say recovery has been “frustratingly slow.”Most tourist areas have reopened, but locals urge visitors to venture farther and support local businesses.
Ricardo Fuentes-Ramírez lives and works in the western Puerto Rican town of Mayagüez, located right next to Cabo Rojo, where he said the “eye of the hurricane made landfall.”
Hurricane Fiona ripped through the island on Sept. 18, flooding homes and businesses and leaving, at times, the entire island vulnerable and in the dark.
Nine days after the storm, Fuentes-Ramírez, an assistant professor of economics at the University of Puerto Rico-Mayagüez, said there were still trees and utility poles on the ground around Mayagüez.
