Bulgaria regularly ranks as one of the best-value places for Britons to go on holidays – and this lesser-known resort there could be just the ticket for their next budget break in the sun.
Albena, set on the country’s Black Sea coast, is often overlooked by holidaymakers in favour of better-known resorts such as Sunny Beach.
However, travel companies Travelgenix and Jupita are now launching the destination to the UK trade, making the resort’s hotels easier to book through British travel agents thanks to updated booking technology.
Conveniently, the resort lies just a three-hour, 20-minute flight from London. Wizz Air flies to the nearest airport, Varna Airport, which is a 40-minute drive away, daily from London Luton Airport. One-way tickets are as little as £58.
There are more than 30 hotels dotted across the resort and room rates are very affordable – a night in the four-star, all-inclusive Hotel Laguna Garden is priced from £38 a night, while the all-inclusive Hotel Ralitsa Aqua Club is £48 a night.

The private resort town – which is fringed by a 6km- (four-mile) long beach – has been welcoming travellers since it was built in the 1960s.
Today, facilities include 22 outdoor tennis courts and three indoor ones, as well as nine football fields. Elsewhere across the resort holidaymakers will find outdoor CrossFit stations and a range of water sports amenities.
On top of that, there’s a waterpark for kids to splash around in – Aquapark Aqua Mania – as well as restaurants, a cinema and a range of shops.

There are spas and wellness centres offering treatments such as mud therapies, hydrotherapy and shiatsu massages in several hotels across the town.
The resort lies next to the Baltata Nature Reserve, a forested area that’s home to more than 180 bird species. Its hiking trails can be explored on foot or using one of the resort’s rental bikes.
Albena has a focus on sustainability too – there are organic vegetable gardens, an emphasis is placed on sourcing food from local suppliers, and the resort incorporates solar energy.

What’s more, there are no cars at the resort – instead, travellers get around via an electric shuttle bus.
The resort’s website says that Albena is ‘the preferred holiday destination thanks to its golden sand, the endless beach, the gentle sea, the clean air, the pleasant hotels and our traditional Bulgarian hospitality’.
Bulgaria’s affordability was highlighted by the latest holiday money report from the Post Office, which examined the cost of a typical day in the sun on the Black Sea coast.
It found that an eight-item holiday shopping basket, including everyday items such as sunscreen and a glass of wine, costs around £58.
Other popular seaside resorts that also skirt the Black Sea coast include Golden Sands and Kavarna.
