Anyone who’s spent time in East Coast cities likely understands their undeniable draws, from exquisite architecture and pulsing cultural beats to an insatiable buzz found among the perpetual motion. This is especially true for New York City – a swirling symphony of chaos and charm that sneakily takes its hold on even the least suspecting visitors.

While chatting with locals during a recent wintertime visit, we heard many candid tales about how challenging and scary these past pandemic years have been. And yet, in true New York form, amid the sensory circus and occasional overwhelm, we continually witnessed quiet, subtle moments of people taking care of one another – in ways small and large.

Start your East Coast adventure by driving or flying into the nation’s capital, an intriguing hub of grand, storied monuments, memorials and (mostly free) museums. Although D.C. is known for its rich history and ongoing political importance, it has an eclectic, artsy side that proudly showcases the talents of local artists, makers, musicians, chefs and activists (be sure to check out new downtown addition, Black Lives Matter Plaza).
